Too Jtfocli Distrust.
As public expressions of com
mercial and financial distrust
created and maintained hard times
so will expressions of political dis
trust handicap our representatives
in the performance of their duties
at Wasbingtob. /‘Give a dog a bad
.name,-and you may as well kill
him.” ‘
Give a political party a had name
and its unfullness is materially
hindered. Continual adverse crit
icism will cripple any organization
that ever-existed, be its character
commercial, social, regligioua or
political.
Just now the democratic party
is between the upper and Jower
mill-stones of criticism, and no
good results are in sight. The ad-
vocats of the free coinage of sil
ver condemn the democratic major
ity in the House for allowing the
passage of the bill to repeal the
Sherman silver purchase law, with
out condition. They sav the pledg
es of the platform are not being
carried out.
Those who favor the uncondi
tional repeal of the Sherman law
are criticising the senate because
the hill to that effect has not been
acted upon. They say that th e
pledges of the platform are not
being redeemed.
Thus ther9 appears to be two
factions, each placing a different
construction upon the silver plank
of the democratic platform.
She continued expression of dis-
frust continued in these criticisms
hurts the democratic party contin
ually, by bolstering up the hopes
of the enemies of democracy.
It is a well-known fact that on
ly through the acknowledged mer
its of the platform was the South
saved last year from the vigorous
assaults of the third party people
Now the populist leaders gleeful
ly exclaime “I told you so,” every
time a democrat gives expressions
to distrust of the democratic con
gress.
Let us have less public expres
sion of political distrust, and we
will have less cause of distrust.
The boneful republican laws that
i.-fillet us were not enacted in a day,
and it will require more than one
extra session to displace them with
salutary measures.
Tho repeal of the Sherman law
is imperatively demanded by the
democratic platform, and the extra
session was called to accomplish
that purpose.
The democrats hereafter pro
vide for the use of silver as lie
platform demands.
A bill to repeal the federal elei-
tions law is before the house, a bjl
to replace the McKinley tarff
law is being framed, as are bils
for an income tax, the proper tre
of silver as moEey and the reptal
of the 10 par cent tax on stde
bank isaurs. All ibis in prociss
of formation, and the regular sis-
sion of Congress not yet at haid.
Bat for the extra session nothhg
at. all would have been done Tous
it ceems that democrats have cajse
to anticipate a complete redenp-
tion of the platform pledges.
Let us for a while withhold jrar
expressions of distrust, and nbst
likely they will be entirely ou of
place when the regular session gets
fairly to work.
We should remember that Here
are many individual demccrtts,
and it is proverbial that thereare
“many men of many minds.’’ All
cannot be suited exactly. j

Every man la the architect of
his own fortune. Any man who
thinks that aDy political party, by
being in power, cau fill'his. pock-'

if he waits for the party to do; it.

world is what we make it, socially,
mortally and financially. What
ever a' man sows he will reap. If
a man will rely more upon his in
dividual efforts, trusting in God
for guidance, wisdom and blessings,
doing the best he can under all
circumstances, he will make life a
success; but if he puts his trust in
parties, politicians, demagogues,
crunk3 and office seekers out of a
job, be is going to be left in a de
plorable condition and sadly disap
pointed.
Every man should take a proper
amount of interest in politics
to vote and advocate honest meas
ures and seek to elect honest men
to office, but if he relies on the ex
pectancy of favors from office-hold
ers or the government, he will
make a woeful mistake. The gov
ernment can do no more than to
see that every man and his family
are protected in the enjoyment of
personal liberty, private property,
and life—that one man does no
harm to his neighbor, and that all
are given an equal chance to work
ou.!t their happiness and peace, free
from molestation or hindrance. In
life’s battle, fortune and plenty
come not to the laggard or the lazy,
biit to the hustler, eneigentic'and

ceeded in getting a land lot ia the

They met at Shade’s house on the

In dividing the powder some was
spilled oa the floor. Shade threw
a soonful of this in tbe fire, which
flashed and set fire to the rest on
the floor. This in turn 'caused the
can to explode, which demolished
the house and dreadfully mangled
Ihe thieves. The roo! and one aide

also discharged, the load taking ef

Going into debt is not necessari

the sake of possessing a machine
