The last grand jury recommends
that the county officers who occu
py rooms in the court house pay
for all the wood they use while en
gaged in the service of the county
or otherwise. We fear our country
fiiends will hereafter miss the com
forts of a warm fire on a cold winter
day when they come to town as
we have never known our county
officers to make a fortune out of
their offices even when wood was
furnished by the county. It seems
to us that econeifiy might be used
to greater advantage it applied iu
other ways than in depriving its
officers of fire diming the winter,

A Coiiialy Court.
Unexpected to most of the citi
zens of the county, the grand jury
which was in session last week rec
ommended a county court for Tay
lor county, and before the recom
mendation had time to cool, the
Governor was advised of tb6 fact
and Mr, O. M. Colbert was ap
pointed Judge of said court as will
be seen elsewhere. The appoint
ment is a very good one as Mr.
Colbert is well posted in law and a
gentleman who will no doubt giye
general satisfaction; we find hower-
er, that a great many of the citizens
of the county are much opposed to
having a county_court as they fear
it will increase litigation anil not
lessen the expenses of the Superior
court, and besides hinder much
valuable time among the farmers
Others who have given tbe subject
much thought think difierenltv.and
hundred dollars to the tax payers
of 1 he county. Having had no ex
perience in law and having given
the subject but little thought, we
are unable to decide at this mo
ment which is best for our county.
It seems to us however that less
lawing and more praying would be
beet for the county. The advocates
of the county court have agteed
that if it does not prove a benefit
to
ex
vote to' have it abolished. This is
a very fair-'p'ropositidu and m hope
will- jpfroyb saristaetbry.

Our readers will be pained to learn
of tbe death of Miss Mary Sturdivant,
which sad event occurred at her home
in Butler.about 1 o’clock p. in., on
Monday the 9th iuet. She had been

unexpected even to her own family.
She was a life long member of the
