A PSALM OF PRAISE
LESSON TEXT—Psalm 103:1-22.
GOLDEN TEXT—Bless the Lord, O
mv soul.
PHIMAHY TOPIC—A Song or Praise
JUNIOR TOPIC—A Song ot Praise.
INTERMEDIATE AND SENIOR TOP
IC—The Privilege of Worshiping G 'd
YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULT TOP
IC—The tlnblt of Thankfulness.
This lion tit 1 till psalm ot praise f«l
lows one of the importunate pleadings
for help In time of great need An
drew Bnr.nr calls It "A Song ot a lie
deemed One b.v the Redeemer's Side.'
It Is entirely given tip to praise; not a
single supplication being found In ll
I. Adoration for Personal Benefit*
(vv. 15).
The I’snltnlsl ends upon his soui to
bless God's holy name. Man’s whole
nature intellectually und spiritually. Is
called upon to adore God. Note the
benefits recognized by the Psalmist:
1. “Forglvelli all thine Iniquities”
(v. 3) Pardon of our sins is the most
Important of ull God's benefits.
2. “Ileuleth all thy diseases” (v. 3).
Healing here refers to that of the
body and the soul. Renovation of the
entire nature, especially the moral, fol
lows torglrenes8 of sins.
3. "Redeemeth thy life from destruc
tion" (v. 4). The sinner Is Id the
position of u debtor. All the demands
made against him because ot Ills «lns.
were paid by Jesus Christ. '
4. "C'rowtieth thee with loving kind
ness" (v. 4). The redeemed oue not
only has forgiveness of slnB, but Is In
vested with the full rights of lienven
ly citizenship.
5. “Sntlsfietl) thy mouth" (v. 6).
When one enters Into suvlng relation
ship with Christ lie does not Incur loss,
but great gain. He is not deprived of
any rights.
II. Praise for God's Excellencies
(vv. 0-13).
The Psalmist now looks nwny front
the benefits bestowed to the very
quality of the being who bestowed
them.
1. His justice (v. 0).
“He exeeuteth righteousness.” God
is always against the oppressor and
on the side of the oppressed. This points
to the time when Messiah's reign shall
extend over the whole world.
2. lie reveals Himself (v. 7). This
He did In a peculiar way to Moses and
the children of Israel. The very name
Jehovah means Self-revenllng One
(Ex. 3:14). God cretded man In His
likeness and Image In order that lie
might not only reveal Himself, hut
that He might share His goodness with
the creature.
3. - Merciful and gracious (v. 8). As
a sinner man needs pardon and favor.
God In Ills mercy pardons the sinner
wlm culls upon Him and through His
grace He bestows favors upon him
4. Not ulwu.vs contending (». 9)
God’s love for His children moves‘Him
to contend with them. When they
turn front their sin, He censes to chas
ten them. God holds no grudges, lie
forgets our stubborn follies ns soon
as we turn from them.
5. God's forgiveness (vv. 10-13).
Tilts forgiveness Is manifested In
His not dealing with us according to
our sins, in showing supreme mercy.
In putting away sin us far as the East
is from the West, and In fatherly pity.
We usually think to praise God for
what He has done. Ilow much we
ought to praise Him for what He lias
retrained from doing.
III. Man’s Frailty and God’s Eter-
nlty (vv. 14-19).
1. Ills frailty (vv. 1410).
(1) He Is but dust (v. 14). God con
stltuted man’s body out of the dust
of the ground, therefore He knows his
frailty. (2) Ills days nre as grass
(v. 15). He nourishes as the flower ot
the Held. As the grass disappears un
der n blighting wind (v. 16). so a
small blast from God will destroy
man's life.
2. God's eternity (vv. 17-19). God’s
goodness and merry nre from ever ■
lasting to everlasting. Tills goodness
anil mercy lie shows from generation
to generating.
IV. Call to Universal Thanksgiving
(vv 2022).
Since Ills dominion Is over all. It
calls for recognition hy all.
1. Angels (v. 20). Intelligent spirits
that hear Ills messages and go on His
errands nre called upon to praise and
adore Him.
2. Ills hosts (v. 21). By hosts here
is likely meant the sun. moon and
stars. They are called upon to give
Him due prnlse (I’s. 19:1).
3. His works (v. 22).
Whatever lie hns done, whether In
erentlon. providence or redemption.
Uls works made known his goodness
