Huckabee Describes “Sukiaki” Attended In Japan Following is an interesting article written by Mrs. Weyman Huckabee, from far away Japan. Mrs. Huckabee is the wife of Rev. W. C. Huckabee, a former greatly beloved pastor of the Reynolds Methodist church. She land her husband are located in Japan where her husband is a missionary worker for the Methodist denomina tion. The story is as follows: A few nights ago some friends asked us to join them in a party who was going to St. Lukes hospital to a supper that was being given for | the benefit of a new nurse’s home. The supper was called a “suskiaki" I which is one of the favored Japanese | meals among the foreigners as well as among the Japanese. I When we reached the hospital we ' removed our wraps and were shown i to the room where the supper was to I be held. This room is the recreation room for the nurses so it is of Japa- j nese style with a matting about ' three inches thick, covering the floor. When this matting is seen it always means one definite thing—ones shoes must be removed before entering the room. There were girls at the door 1 to check the shoes so we left our 1 shoes and were shown to our table. | This was my first experience sit- WESLEY THURSDAY & FRIDAY MAY 17-18 El Brendel, in: "OLSEN’S BIG MOMfNT” SATURDAY, MAY 19 MONDAY, MAY 21 Tom Mix, In; “TERROR TRAIL” The screen fairly sizzles when Tom Mix and his new pony, Tony, Jr., egt oging in this tremendous ly exciting Western melodrama. Sukiaki : s always cooked at the first of the week because of sikness. table ar.d in this case the nurses had 1 left their uniforms behind and at each table there was a nurse dressed in a pretty kimona and it was she ) who prepared the meal for us. We all I sat around the table and hibachi (the j open charcoal stove of the Japanese) 1 and watched the food while it was j being prepared. First a little of the : fat from beef is heated in the iron pot (the pot resembles our frying | pan though it has not a handle) then with chop sticks all of the different ingredients were added—thin silvers of steak, onions, toiu (bean curd), 1 mush-rooms, bean sprouts, some long string something of which I do not | remember the name, and little green ! vegetables that look like tiny stalks of celery. Along with this is added soy bean sauce enough to keep the food moist and to give it a “yummy” flavor. Each person is supplied with a Large bowl of rice, a dish of socalled pickles and chop sticks. Of course chop sticks are not really chop sticks but “hashi.” By the time the food is done every one is raving with hunger and the odors are grand. The next step is for every one to dish in with his own hashi and get what he likes from the pot, dip it in a raw egg then put it .on the rice and then eat it with the rice. I must admit that I “skip” one stage and that is the dipping in the raw egg. I cannot do that and enjoy the sukiaki. When one has eaten what hd'' had dipped from the pot he again dips into the pot with the same hashi with which he has been eating—but since the pot is boiling we foreigners dip right in and hone that the heat kills what ever germs our neighbors may have put in the pot with his hashi. We each “consumed” several bowls of rice and made many dips into the pot and when we were com- petely filled, we were given an en tertainment by a magician, a Japa nese vocalist and some Japanese dances were done by two of the nurses. I had never seen real Japa nese dances and I thought it rather j pretty though a little odd. The “Sa- I kara” dance was done since this is I the season for the sakara (cherry) W of j and Mrs. U. S. Now is the time to visit Japan if one can come for but one season The cherry trees are in full bloom and Japan is truly a land of beauty. I think people often believe that the cherry blossoms are “over rated” but we do not think that possible. From over high garden walls we see branches covered with the beautiful flowers and there are many parks that are noted for their cherry trees. Last Sunday it was estimated that over a million people visited the vari ous parks to see the blooms. We hope to see some of the places this week that are famous because of the cherry blossoms. Such pleasures as I have been de scribing add much to the life here where every day we spend long hours in the study of the Japanese language. We do not mind the study but a little diversion does a lot in the way of keeping the lessons from becoming monotonous.
