God’s Plan is Deliverance
“The angel of the Lord encarnp-
eth round about them that hear him
and delivereth them.” This was ab
solutely verified- in Peter’s deliver
ance from the Roman prison. Some
times he delivers people through
Ueath as in the case of James. Some
he delivers them as in the
case of Peter in today’s lesson, even
though he was to be martyred at a
ater date. This was about the time
that Herod Agrippa I, nejihew of the
Herod 1 who had had John- the Baptist
beheaded, was king over Palestine,
from- 41 A. D. to his death in 44. He
nils seeking the best wuy to please
the Jews so he started a systematic
persecution of the Christians at Jeru
salem. The charge that he made
ed Christ asstheir king, the
first blow fell upon James. He was
killed not according to Jewish law
ith a Roman sword. He was
the first of the apostles to suffer
martyrdom. T.he Jews were very

more prominent man than James,

Roman prisoiiu Herod aimed to keep
Peter in prison till after the Pass-

time. He intended to keep him there
and put him out of the way as soon
as the feast was over. The arrest of
i’eter againi brought the members of
the church at Jerusalem to their
knees in earnest prayer that Peter
might in- some way be spared. They
continued their prayers day and
night for some time. It was ia a
rather spectacular manner that Peter
was delivered from prison about the
time he was to have been brought
out by Herod and executed. He was
in a cell bound with chains and sol
diers guarding him. In front of this
cell armed sentries stood guard.
Herod was taking no chances. So
confident was Peter of the outcome
of his imprisonment he fell asleep.
He was peacefully awaiting the will
of God.

aroused Peter who was asleep and
told him to get up and then, the
chains fell from him. “Gird thyself”

then disappeared. It took Peter same
time to realize that a miracle had

all was clear to him. “Now I know

Deliverance Through Answer
To Prayer
The disciples were expecting the
execution of Peter and were spend
ing the night in prayer at the home
of Mary, John Mark’s mother. When
Peter realized that he was at liberty
he immediately went to the house of
Mary and knocked at the door. So
overjoyed was the maid that answer
ed the knock that she failed to turn
him in. The inmates of the house
thought that Peter’s spirit was
aunting them. Finally the door was
opened and the little group was filled
