will we avail ourselves of the privi

The lawyers mentioned ln today's
lesson kept on opposing Jesus and
John the Baptist who showed the
people the right way. It is an im
portant matter today that religious
teachers should have an insight
intoth ings spiritual, and a correct
understanding of the Bible as it
relates to practical religion. Their
responsibility is great and they
should seek divine help in leading
people aright.

Many of the sayings of our lesson

vehement and more extended de

Religious Inconsistences
• It is very likely that the record
that we have in our lesson today
of the talk in the home of the
pharasee is an abreviated one. A
fuller report might have recorded
further antagonistic sayings and
attitudes on the part of the phari
sees which later caused many
woes against them. To say the
least of it Jesus showed up some

pers and did it in no uncertain
terms. He accused them of inner
wickedness. Although they might
be outwardly clean particularly
concerning their religious activities
They tithed the least things, even
the garden herbs. Still j they were
inconsistent in this. They seemed
to think that when they set
aside this one tenth that it licensed
them to any kind of dealing with
their fellow man. Jesus was bitter
in his damnation of such practices.
One trouble with the world today
is that the pharasees are not all
dead yet. Especially does this ap
ply to the church. There are those
in the church today who can per
form various religious rights with a
very fair exterior. There might be
corruption in the dealing that they
would not wish the world to know
about. Many times we find Chris
tians are inconsistent in their em
phasis upon matters of but little
importance.
And we are like the pharasees in
that they are indifferent to weight
ier concerns.
The Key to Knowledge
Jesus condemned the lawyers
for taking away from the people
the key of knowledge. Their teach
ing -were all legalistic and relig
iously; their teachings were still
weaker. They were blind guides
trying to lead the blind. They had
no conception. That is one trouble
with religionn now. Those who pro
fess to be Christians are far too
often ignorant of the real teaching
of religion. If we are to lead and
teach others, we must have the
necessary preparation. We must
have a knowledge of religion that
is obtainable only through com
l munion with God, through His
Son. The glorious part of it is tho
that we can always get this
I knowledge if we will but make the
' effort. Many times we try to do a
job that we are not prepared to do.
