THE DA YOF AUTHORITY
Lesson Text Matt. 22:12-22
Golden Text: My house shall be
called a house of prayer for
all people.
Devotional Reading: Isa. 9:1-7
We should always recognize that
fact that authority is the keynote
-of religion. In the end we want
to know what our religion Is or
whether or not It has authority for
the promises It makes. We study In
our lesson today how Jesus began
to put Into action his authority.
His followers proclaimed him King
on the first day of the week. The
next day Jesus began with regal
power proceeded to do things
which called forth angry protests
of his enemies.
It with these bold acts of au
thority that we begin today's
study.
Cleaning Up the Temple
On the second day (Monday) of
what we call Holy Week the Lord
entederd into the temple and be
gan to throw out all those who
bought and sold within Its walls
and to turn over the money
changers' tables. If we did not
have some knowledge of what
was back of this commerce which
kept the temple In such an uproar
wo would think that our Lord was
working In a very high handed
way. The truth of the matter is
that the merchants and money
changers had no business being in
the temple to carry on their busi
ness. Generatipns before booths
had been set up in the vicinity of
the temple.. In order that those
who came 1 a long distance might
buy sheep and dover near the
place for sacrifices, but with the
passing of time this quite legiti
mate business had turned into an
unscrupulous racket and graft
which at last did not hesitate to
enter the. temple itself. The high
priests and their associates con
trolled what we would call con
cessions to sell these sacrificial
animals. Through an agreement
between the high priests, temple
official? and merchants, no man
could offer a sacrifice unless he
bought it from these accredited
vendors. The money changers who
changed the Jewish money into
the temple were regular grafters.
They would short-change theii
customers and practice all sorts of
deceptive and dishonest tricks,
These ways of doing would havi
been bad enougn at any other
place lather thai in the u-mple,
but w? hi sanctioned oy the ri;.-lr-

house of God raised the anger of
our 'Ai d and v..- the ar'.j time in
his life he resorted to physical
force. We need to study well the
fact that upon his entry into Jeru
salem that he went immediately
into the temple. Very lively he
saw that the existing conditions
needed hir- attention. He knew that
no social problem could be rerne
died till the temple had a general
cleaning up. .
Today we waste much time try
ing to solve social problems in the
vity and nation and fell to' realize
the fact that the social problem Is
a spiritual problem. A nation is
just as strong as the character of
its people and a people's character
is as strong as the churches make
them. The question might be
asked whether or not the Saviour
used force on this occasion. The an
swer is that he most assuredly
did. The truth in the incident for
that they had not had any mis
understanding of the purpose
which called them to oppose him.
The truth is they understood him
too well. They had no objections
to his healings or his preaching.
They would also have joined had
he have led a revolution against
Rome. They seemed to have had
from the beginning to have sensed
the fact that Jesus aimed to force
a religious reformation. He was
going to put an end to their dis-
hones tways of doing. He was go
ing to deprive them of their au
thority. The cleaning up of the
temple, casting out of the hishon-
cst vendors only confirmed in- the
minds of our Lord's enewles the
conviction they had long enter
tained, that this man aimed to
strip them of their authority and
their dishonestly obtained gains.
Many times children are close'
observers. The children gathered at
the temple seemed to sense and to
catch the significance of these
events and they began to cry out
in one accord, “Hosanna to the
son of David.” This only served to
make the chief priests madder.
They called upon Jefeus to repudi
ate what these children had said in
his behalf. Jesus answered them
by quoting from the Psalms, "out
of the mouths of babes and suck
lings thou has perfected praise.
Jesus made plain to them that)
the praise of childhood and youth
is the very perfection of praise.
Every minister knows that when a
young person praises his sermon
or praises him as a religious lead
er or counsellor that is praise in
deed. Youth has since the begin
ning of time ben hard to deceive,
In ways that matured people have
forgotten long ago, boys and girls
very readily discern between truth
and falsehood. The same thing
holds good today and by so be
ing increases our responsibility to
be diligent in our nurture of
youth.
A Curse on Unproductiveness
Beginning with the 18th verse of
our lesson text we have an ac
count of our Lord's cursing the
fig tree. We cannot understand the
story unless we realize that the
fruit of the fig tree appears first
and then the leaves. Jesus was
right in expecting to find fruit on
the tree. Still when he came
upon the tree he found a profusion
of leaves. When he discovered that
the tree bore no fruit, Jesus said,
“Let there be no fruit found on
thee henceforth and forever.” Im
mediately the tree withered away
and perished. It seems that our
Lord wished the incident to be
both a miracle and a parable. The
indications to be drawn are • that
the miracle was only incidental to
the setting of the parable. The tree
covered in leaves gave every in
dication of bearing fruit but
nevertheless, was devoid of fruit.
This is a true picture in that
day. The people were serious
about their religious practices, but
in face of the nation produced no
fruit.
Their great religious activity of
but little more than going thru
with motions.
This parable is applicable to
your life and to mine as well as to
ancient Israel. Unfruitfulness will
always bring upon itself a curse.
Our Lord always stressed the im
portance of spiritual fruitfulness.
We are also taught from this
parable that the geneslsis of man's
religion and spiritual lives by the
priests they produce. The Lord also
told in this connection, “He that
abideth in me, and I in him the
same beareth much fruit. So we
can all bear fruit if we will but
fulfill the condition. We have the
power and privilege of bearing
fruit.
If our religion does not bear fruit
our lives spiritually wither away
us is that those who graft into the our lives spiritually witner away
church will yield to no other pow- as did the fig tree. Concerning this
er but force. It was a
anger that the Lord
righteous
displayed
when he came in contact with hu
man depravity at its lowest ebb.
Jesus always has nothing but
compassion for the weak and err
ing ones. But his anger exhibited
itself when he came in contact
with dishonesty and cruel self-
seeking among those who are sup
posed to be spiritual leaders. Such
conduct always stirs the righte
ous anger of the Lord. Man's char
acter will reveal itself when he
enters into association with his
felow-man. Many men will take
the advantage of his brother. When
Jesus cleaned out the lame, the
blind and the hallt came to him
and he healed them. After the
cleaning of the temple of its filth
and corruption it returned to its
true function. The spirituality
came within its precincts and
God's power through Jesus healed
them spiritually and physically.
For a brief time the heavenly
light shined down upon the temple
precincts. During this time Jesus
healed these lame and blind, and
restored them to sound bodies and
minds but best of all he healed
them spirtually.
Pharasee Enemy
We are taught that when the
pharasecs and priests beheld the
wonderful things that Jesus did,
and heard the children singing in
the temple they were filled wit in
dignation.
Now, why should they not have
been angered at this teacher from
we have these words from our Lord,
“they gather them and cast them
into the fire and they are burned”.
What Faith Will Do
The desiples could not see in the
withering fig tree the setting forth
of a most significant parable. In
stead they saw only a miracle. But
our Lord was not angry with them
on account of their failure to see.
He knew that if the events of fu
ture years would reveal the truths
to them.
The incident of the fig tree
teaches us two things. First, God is
always willing to meet us on half
way grounds or more. He caused
the destruction of the fig tree that
the desciples might see the picture
of the future destruction of the
Jewish nation. The bad part of the
Incident is that the disciples missed
the point of the teaching of the
parable. They spoke of the incident
as a great miracle. The Lord in his
instructions now comes down to
their level and taught them the
power of faith.
The second lesson teaches us to
strive to do the impossible. The
Lord tells us not to be kept from
doing what seems to be impossible.
Men of faith can do anything. A
longing for high ideals is greatly
commendable. He then goes on to
say, “All things which ye shall ask
in prayer believing, ye shall receive

As Theme Of Article,
'Wake Up Taylor County'
Dear people of Taylor Cqunty
(and the whole world as a true
matter) won't you stop and think
for just five minutes, what an aw
ful condition this old world is in.
We are not only in a war for the
freedom of speech, but we are in a
war against sin. Unless we do stop
fall on our knees, and cry to God
for help for ourselves and the
whole world, we are damned, and
our doom is sealed for that bottom
less pit.
At the very longest, dear people,
It can't be long till Jesus is coming
back to this earth to gather all His
jewels and oh, what will become
of those who have rejected Him
here on this earth.
Stop long enough to read the
signs of His Coming. Most all of
these have already been fulfilled.
In Luke, the Sadducees asked
Christ what the signs would be.
About the first sign He gives to us
is this: "Ye shall hear of wars and
rumors of wars. Nation will rise
against Nation, and Kingdom
against Kingdom.” Surely, Beloved,
this sign is now being fulfilled by
our Great World War today.
People are persecuting the ones
who are telling the world where
they are doomed for, if they don't
change. Christ, also said, we'd be
persecuted. We are hated of men
but, Praise His Holy Name, it is
for His sake. We see everyday,
men's hearts failing them for fear
and for looking after those things
which are coming on the earth.
They know the time on earth is
not long, but yet they will not say
"Here I am Lord, I'm Yours, cleanse
me and then use me just as you
need me."
Oh, what an awful hour that will
be when the sun and moon shall
be darkened, and the stars begin
to fall to the earth, for then we
shall see the son of man coming
in a cloud. He will come as the
lightning from the east. We will
not have time to fall on our knees
then. It will be too late. We will be
gone—gone—gone! Where? To hell.
Dear people, there are only two
of the signs He gives us that have
not been fulfilled already or being
fulfilled. In Luke 21:20, He tells us
that when the armies move on in
Jerusalem, the desolation is nigh;
oh, let us pray that the army will
not move to Jerusalem till everyone
has repented and come to Christ.
Loved ones, listen to the last
warning He gives us. It is this
“And this Gospel shall be preached
In all the world for a witness unto
all nations; and then shall the end
come.” Oh, we do not know the
day and hour that this Gospel shall
reach over the nations and when
God's few faithful servant have
spread the Gospel over the world,
then He says He will come in the
clouds of Heaven. Surely the Word
is being preached faster and faster
over the world, whether the world
hears it or not.
Some will ask, “Who will go back
with Him when He shall come?”
He gives us this answer in Mat.
24:13, “He that shall endure to the
end.”
Christ has had the reigns on the
horses of sin very tight until now.
He is now relaxing them and the
horses are plunging faster and
faster. Very soon He is going to
turn the reins loose. Then we that
have endured until the end shall
go up in the clouds of Heaven
with Him. Those who are found
meddling withthis world will be
rejected.
Oh, people of Taylor County,
wake up and realize that very
soon Jesus is coming back to
gather all His jewels.
Lets all pray that a nation-wide
revival will soon sweep the coun
try. Not until then will this terrible
war cease. God is tired of the wick
ed ways of the people. He is a very
merciful God. But, remember, He is
sending His Xvrath on the people to
see if He can wake them up before
He comes back. He does not want
to go back up in the clouds with
out taking every one of us with
Him. It will grieve Him very much
to leave some behind.
"Except ye repent and become as
a little child, ye cannot enter the
Kingdom of Heaven.”
