The Pharisees wanted Jesus to

In answering therri, Jesus went
back of the Rabbis and back of

poSisble because marriage is the
sign and seal of a mystical living
relationship between man and wo
man which God established as
part of the creation.
The first chapter of Genesis
which deals with the creation
shows the origin of man and wo
man. The keynote truth of hte
story of the creation is that man
and woman were not merely cre
ated but created so as to empha
size forever the truth that they are
made for each other. The origin
and ergulations of marriage is di
vine because it is according to the
commandments of God. The Bible
speaks of the mystery of marriage.
It is one of God’s great and Holy
mysteries, because it goes back to
the origin and beginning of life it
self.
In the Beginning
In the study of the New Testa
ment one is struck by our Lord’s
reasoning. He never touched any
thing in a hasty maniter. He went
to the bpttom of everything with
his reasoning and often left his
hearers in amazement, and unable
to answer him. There was nothing
that puny man alone could an
swer.
The Pharasees came to him once
upon a time with a question that
the thought that either way He
answered it would get him in trou
ble. Divorce was then a great prob-
blem as it is now. At that time
(duirng the Lord’s ministry) there
was two different schools of
thought regarding divorce. One
school of thought was the teaching
of Sham-mai, in believing that
th4re was but one valid reason for
divorce, namely: Adultry. The other
group which followed the teachings
of Hillel, that a mon could divorce
his wife for any cause. So they ap-
J approached the Master to settle the
question, "Is it lawful for a man to
(put away his wife for any reason.
They were asking him to take sides

consider the consequences before

cult to reconcile the practices of

New Testament.
The Marriage in Cana of Galilee
Not only by words but by acts,
Jesus commended the sacred bond
of matrimony.
We are told that he and his moth
er and his disciples were invited to
a wedding in Cana of Galilee. It
was here that he performed his
first miracle, and he did it as a
sign. Usually we think that it was
a sign of power, but a more careful
reading leads us to see that he
probably meant as a sign, or an
inclination of the reverence with
which he regarded the holy bonds
of marriage.
To a bride, there is no day in her
life so important as her wedding
day.
Here at a wedding to which Jesus
and his mother and disciples had
been invited, a young woman was
about to experience a humiliation
which she would remember as long
as she should live. The wine was
giving out. People would speak in
irdicule of her and of her family
in years to come. In this case
Jesus did not hesitate to use his
divine power to same the bride
from embarrassment. His mother
showed her trust in his divine pow
er when she said to the servants
“whatsoever he saith to you, do
it.”
>He was the founder of what we
know- as the Christian home, and
the best home one ever had.
