bottom of this defection was the
teaching of a false doctrine. This
false doctrine was the teaching of
the commandments of men in
stead of the doctrine of God. They
put aside the fifth commandment
and substituted for it the minute
and ceremonial ablutions. Truly
and strongly he came at his crit
ics with “full well ye rejected the
commandment of God that ye
may keep your own tradition”.
Then Jesus follows this quotation
with an illustration and a com
ment. He uses the fifth command
ment as an example. Moses com
manded, “Honor thy father and
thy mother” and the penalty of
the disobedience of it was death,
but tlmse people had so cover: d
up the original command with
the commandments of man that
they actually nullify the ancient
law. They taught that if a boy
wanted to escape the duty of pa
rental support lie could label liis
property as "eorban” that is a
gift to God, but he could keep
the property as long as he would
and use it for whatever he chore
except for the one thing of sup
. portin his parents. This was tru
j ly a shocking equivocation per
formed in the very name of God
who primal law was thereby
trampled under foot.
On Calvary
During the awful hours on Cal
vary, Mary stood by her son. She
she accepted the provision he
made for her future maintenance.
For years she had looked to him,
her first born, as her support Jo
seph her husband seems to have
passed away, as he is not men
tioned from the time Jesus was 12
years of ago until ho was 30 years
old. No mother's heart had re
joiced as did Mary's over the
power and popularity of her son.
She had witnessed his rise to the
pinnacle of fame and she felt
that he was speedily coming into
his own. She also saw opposition
began forming against him.
clouds of opposition and hatred
followed him till it all ended on
Calvary.
Yet through it all she stood by
the Cross, her own heart true to
her son. He on the other hand
saw his mother standing with
John. To his mother he cr.ic!, “wo
man behold thy son”. To John he
said “behold thy mother” mean
ing Mary. They understood wha
he meant, and from that very
hour John, the beloved disciple
took Mary the mother of Jesus V
his home probably in the City ot
Jerusalem where tradition tell?
us that she remained till her
death several years later.

“Probation After Death is the
subject of the Lesson-Sermon
which will be read in Churches of
Christ, Scientist, throughout Ihc
world Sunday.
The Golden is: “I have set the
Lord always before me; becaus<
he is at my right hand, i shall
not be moved” (Ps. 16:8).
Among the citations whicl
comprise the Lesson-Sermon is
the following from the Bible:
“Likewise reckon ye also your
selves to be dead indeed unto sin,
but alive unto God through Jesus
Christ our Lord” (Rom. 6:11).
The Lesson-Sermon also in
cludes the following passage from
the Christian Science textbook,
“Science and Health with Key to
the Scriptures” by Mary Baker
Eddy: “If the change called
death destroyed the belief in sin,
sickness, and death, happiness
would be won at the moment of
dissolution, and be forever per
manent; but this is not so. Perfec
tion is gained only by perfection.
