In reply to your letter, I am glad
to send you news of your husband
Pfc. James, although I am afraid
that the information I give is not
exactly what you and your family
had hoped for.
Let me begin by answering
your question concerning a Christ
mas furlough. I am afraid that it
will bo impossible to give to you
the answer that you so much de
sire and that 1 would so very <
much like to give—the answer
that your husband would be able
tc be home for Christmas. You see,
it's like this—with the thousands
of men overseas and transporta
tion facilities being what they
are, it’s impossible to make an ex
ception in the case of one man.
As hard as it may seem, death in
one's family is not even, in many
eases, considered sufficient cause
to grant a man a furlough.
As for news of your husband,
however, I can, and am happy of
the chance to say that he is well
and doing a fine job in the bat
tery. He is liked by all the offic
es and men in the battery and is
certainly a boy that you can be
proud of.
Please believe that I am truly
sorry that it is not possible for
Pfc. James to be with his family
this Christinas, but let me assure
you that he is doing his part to
make it possible for all of us to
be home by next Christmas.
Sincerely yours,
Carl H. Merrill,
Capt. i6th C. A.
