Sore Managers Lose
$5,000 to Holdup Man
On Street in Macon
Macon, Dec. 9—In a daring
armed hold-up on brightly lighted
Cherry Street, two men waylaid
and robbed the S. H. Kress Com
pany manager, R. A. Marshall, of
more than $5,000 Saturday night
at 8 o’ilock as he was on his way
to deposit the funds, including
the store’s entire Saturday 6ales
receipts, in the bank.
Marshall said the two bandits,
both white men, were standing on
the sidewalk as he left Kress store
and started to the First National
Bank to deposit the cash.
The store manager told city de
tectives that one of the two men
drew a pistol, told him to get over
against the wall and ‘‘give me
that.” The other man waited near
the curb, he said, and both got
into black Dodge sedan and made
their getaway as soon as the
money was in their possession.
It was Macon’s first big armed
hold-up in nearly three years, the
last previous one having occurred
in 1943 when Leland Harvey, es
caped convict, was accused of rob
bing a Mulberry Street grocery
store, getting a few hundred dol
lars in cash. Harvey was taken
into custody shortly after the
holdup.
Saturday night’s $5,000 hold-up
occurred in one of the most crowd- |
ed areas of the downtown section
while Saturday shopping crowds
were still on the sidewalks and
the city’s colored Christmas lights !
were on, illuminating the entire,
section. j
Marshall said the whole episode
passed almost unnoticed by the
crowds. Two store employes were
with him at the time, he said, but
were not able to come to his aid.
City detectives G. C. Britt, L. B.
McCallum, W. II. Bargeron and J.
S. Murrow, first officers assigned
to the case, filed Marshall’s report
at headquarters, and all city of
ficers and the state patrol were
enlisted in a search for the two
bandits.
Nearby towns were also notified
by telephone to be on the lookout
for the vehicle in which they
made their escape, partially iden
tified by a Tennessee tag and the
first three numerals of the tag,
which were reported to the detec
tives.
