VET Confesses
fatal Shooting
Of His Father
Abbeville, June 2—A 24-year-old
Wilkes County veteran of three Pa

fice of Sherriff T. J. Smith, confes
sed and surrendered for the fatal
shooting of his father during an
argument at an Abbeville pool
room Saturday afternoon.
SAFE CRACKERS GET
$2,500 AT MACON
Macon, June 4 — Safecrackers
broke into the safe at the Idle
Hour Country Club, about five
miles north of Macon Tuesday
morning and escaped with ap
proximately $2,500, Manager Geo.
Wright reported Tuesday.
The safe was rolled from the
club office, across a golf green and
down a hill where the safe-crack
ers went to work on the door. The
safe contained the weekend club
receipts.
MACON COUNTY LANDMARK
DESTROYED BY FIRE
Montezuma, June 2—The old
Whiteside farm home, a landmark
in Macon County, has been des
troyed by fire. Catching from a
chimney flue while breakfast was
being prepared, the fire trapped
Miss Nellie Whiteside, an invalid

and she was rescued with difficulty,

Macon, June 4—John Thomas, Sr.
82, of Warner Robins, one of Hous
ton County’s most prominent mer
chants and farmers, died in a hos
pital in Macon today. lie was bom
in Houston County April 20, 1864.
Mr. Miller had been a promi
nent Houston County farmer since
1890. In 1930 he was selected as one
of the 12 Master Fanners in the
United Stats. His wite, 'he former
Miss Mamie D. Grace, died in 1932.
He was a membei of the Warner
Robins Methodist Chuich and the
Rutledge F. & A. M. Lodge 198 of
which he was a past master.
WESTERN UNION GIVEN RATE
HIKE OF 10 PER CENT
Washingto, June 4—The Federal
Communications commission an
nounced tonight that it will allow
Wstern Union to increase message
rates 10 per cent for one year and
revise certain classes of service.
The increase will apply to full
rate, day letter, night letter, serial
and pres messages.
Western Union must file revised
rate schedules with the commis
sion and give 30 days’ notice be
fore putting the new rates into
effect.
The commission - also an
nounced that it had ordered a full
investigation of Western Union rate
structure.

Orlando, Fla. June 4—Phil T. Sel-
