Columbus Police Given
Some "Donts" By
Public Safety Board
Columbus.—The Columbus police
department is undergoing a clean
up program.
It was announced by the Board
of Public Safety, which also elevat
ed Sgt. W. T. Whitley to Chief of
the detective force.
Henceforth, the Boardo rdered,
no Columbus police officer can:
1. Engage in politics.
2. Belong to the Ku Klux Klan.
3. Hold a share in juke joints
night clubs, liquor stores, etc.
4. Profit from the operations of
the bug racket, and the peddling
of liquor or women by taxi-drivers
etc.
“You may not know these things
have been going on,” Board Chair
man Oscar Betts told officials of
the Police Department, “but the
Board knows they h^ve been going
on.”

Don't Be April Fool;
Get That 1949 Tag,
Sheriff Wright Warns
Some folks are going to be “April
fools” AFTER April 1 if they don’t
buy their Georgia auto license tags
soon, according to Sheriff Charlie
Wright.
“While the April 1 deadline for
having the 1949 tags is just a few
days off, very few Taylor coun-
tians have purchased their tags,”
the sheriff said.
Washington, March 12—Southern
Senators with Republican help
saved the right to filibuster Mon
day and administration leaders
said the Truman civil rights pro
gram may be as good as defeated.
Two showdown votes, both 46 to
■11 in favor of the Dixie lawmakers
defeated administration effort to
gag debate with a rules change
and left Senate leaders with a
cough decision;
Should they_ continue the fight
.mil tij. to outlast the Southerners
in the current filibuster now in its
j2th day, or should they concede
defeat and get on with important
bills like rent control and labor
law changes now piling up?
Whatever their decision, Presi
dent Truman’s civil rights program
,eems doomed. Democratic Leader
ucas (D-Ill.j said that “in alj
probability” anti-poll tax, 'anti-
ynch and other.such laws won’t
jven be brought up for a vote this
session.
Monday night’s defeat knobkbd
out of the administration’s hands
its main weapon against the Dixie
talkathon. By a 46 to 41 vote the
Senate overruled ^Vice President
Barkley’s decision “that two thirds
of the members could gag debate
on a motion if they wanted.
The rules change—which both
Southerners and Senate leaders
described as an opening wedge for
civil rights bills—would make of
ficial the very ruling the Senate
voted against. It is against the mo
tion to bring up such a rules
change that the Southerners have
been talking.
Democratic leader Lucas (D-111.)
hinted broadly that administration
forces were ready to call quits, in
order to get at a list of top-priority
measures which have piled up in
the past 12 days.
But other high Democrats said
privately they understood Presi
dent Truman favored a fight to
the finish, although Mr. Truman,
vacationing in Key West, Fla., de
clined any comment.
