'Bishop Bound Over
On Manslaughter
Charge in Upson Co.
Thomaston, Ga., March 12—Melvir
Bishop and Evelyn Rogers were
freed of charges of murdering
Robert Hamilton in a commitmeni
hearing today before three justices
of the peace, hut Bishop was or
dered held on a voluntary man
slaughter charge and Miss Rogers
as a material witness. Bonds were
set for them at $2,500 for Bishop
and $1,000 for Miss Rogers
The hearing was held in the su
■ perior court roombeginning at 3:30
j ending with the judgment at ap- * 1
| proximately 6:45 p. m. The court
, room was filled almost to capacity
' during the entire hearing. On the
j bench were Justices of the Peace
i Jas. R. Davis, Thelma Spinks ano
Mark Ellerbee.
The state’s case was presented
by Solicitor General Jack Flynt.His
witnesses were cross examined b>
the defense attorneys, but no wit
nesses were presented for the de
fense.
The three justices of the peace
deliberated between 10 and If
minutes to bring in the following
judgments. The charge of robbery
by force against Bishop was
dropped. The charge against him
of murder was changed to volun
tary manslaughter and he is to be
. held in jail unless a bond of $2,501
is made. The charges against Miss
Rogers was dropped, but she was
ordered held as a material witness
or released under a $1,000 bond.

Monday was removed from Cobb
ounty jail here to face embezzle
ment charges at Camilla, Police
Chief John Lee reported.
Chief Lee listed the suspect as
C. E. Collins, Principal of the
Hopeful School in Mitchell County
Collins was taken back to Camlila
by a Mitchell County deputy sher
iff.
Mitchell County Sheriff, McCul-
ley Harris said in Camilla Satur
day night several boxes of school
textbooks and a quantity of foods
were found in the basement of
Collins’ Cobb County farm, about
15 miles from Atlanta. He added
that the food commodities were as-
! signed to the school by the U. S.
Department of Agriculture.
The goods were discovered, the
sheriff said, after two women who
rented Collins’ house became sus
picious after noticing Government
labels on the merchandise and no
tified police.
Sheriff Harris said labels on
i cases of fruit juices and peanut
i butter were marked “Government
! property, not for resale.”
He declared the women told him
j that Collins said the cases con-
! tamed jars for canning purposes.
"i have no idea how much is
! missing from the school,” the sher
iff added, “but I believe it is a
considerable amount."
Collins was serving his first
year as principal of the Hopeful
School, and also was an ordained
Methodist minister. He had
preached in North and Southwest
Georgia, Sheriff Harris reported.
CIRCUS CHARTER
Macon—Judge Mallory C. Atkinson
has signed an order granting a
charter to the National Circus Cor
poration. The charter allows the
petitioners to operate circuses and
similar entertainment with head
quarters in Macon.
SPECIAL ELECTION
SET IN RANDOLPH
Cuthbert—A special election will
be held in Randolph County April
19 to select a Tax Collector to fill
the unexpired term of Miss Jessie
Turner, who resigned on Feb. 25
after holding the post 13 years.
Mrs. Turner was married Feb. 26
to W. T. Christopher of Montezuma.
