Profit from Hogs
Can Be Boosted,
Farm Agent Says
“You can’t afford to be ‘just
average’ as a hog grower—riot
when you could be making one-
third more profit from your hogs,”
Vernon Reddish, local County
Agent, said this week.
Reddish pointed out that the
Georgia average is just over six
pigs weaned per litter, when sows
should produce eight ' or nine
hogs every farrowing. “That is, if
a good program of feeding and
management is followed,” he add
ed.
The agent continued that right
now during the sow’s gestation
period is the time to start building
these extra pigs and profits.
He explained it thus: “Usually
when sow's are bred, from 9 to 12
or more eggs are fertilized. If the
sow' is in good nutritional con
dition, baby pigs develop and you
get a large litter of big husky pigs
at farrowing. But if the sow is in
poor condition, she’ll reabsorb some
of her unborn pigs. Pigs are lost
that are never even seen.
To get one-third more pigs, Red
dish advised feeding and managing
sows so they’ll be in top nutritional
condition all the way. “Grain alone
is a deficient ration,” he said. “It
doesn’t contain all the vitamins,
minerals and other nutrients a sow
needs to maintain her own body at
the same time she’s building a lit
ter. Therefore, a home-grown grain
must be balanced out with supple
ment to make a complete ration to
give the sow all the nutritional
needs she must have to get one-
third more job done. ”
The county agent said that pro
tein supplement may be fed free
choice or mixed with the grain. A
one to four ratio of a high quality
balanced supplement to grain is
needed in dry lots. One to five is
nil right on good pasture. Reddish
advised hand feeding sow's enough
of the mixture to keep them in
good condition, but not fat. “Four
to six pounds per day, depending
on the size and condition of the
sow is usually enough,” he said.

Fall is a critical time for your brood cows, because they’re furn
ishing mainetnance for their own bodies and building the
Spring calf crop, too. Cows must stay in good condition to drop
the kind of calves you want. About 2/3 of the unborn calf is
built 60 days before it’s birth. Don’t gamble with your brood
cows and future calf crop. Supplement range with Purina Range
Checkers.
