^ Fire Safety Plan
al
Atlanta — Safety Fire Commis
sioner Zack Cravey has enthusias
tically welcomed the inauguration
of a program of fire safety training
9 j lor nurses at Macon and again has
i expressed the hope that other Geor
gie cities will do likewise.
“I think the plan is one of the
finest safety items a city can have
on it s agenda,” he said. “Often my
office receives word of how nurses,
trained in fire emergencies, have
prevented real disasters.”
He explained that Macon was
the first to adopt the program, first
begun four years ago at the Co
lumbus City hospital by Fire
Chief Tom Turner, co-operating
with the superintendent of nurses.
Since then not a single call has
been received by the fire depart
ment from the hospital, the nurses
being able to handle any fire
emergencies which have arisen.
Commissioner Cravey last winter
first asked all hospitals in Georgia
to adopt the plan and only last
August the International Fire
Chiefs Association, at its annual
meeting, unanimously voted for a
compulsory program in hospitals
throughout the nation.
At the time Chief Turner remind
ed the convention that the program
had been in effect in Columbus for
four years.
Under the program Mr. Cravey
declared, student nurses in regu
larly scheduled classes, are in
structed by fire department officers
in every phase of fire fighting and
safety, both in theory and practice,
undergoing the same training as
apprentice firemen.
