We take care of most of our neeas by paying someone else to provide the goods or
services we want. It’s a swell system and we like it.
Sometimes, though, when we can’t get what we want that way or if we have to
pay too much, then we get together with our neighbors and form a cooperative asso
ciation. Since we are just going to serve ourselves as members of our association,
there is no point in trying to make a profit from it.
Each of us has an equal vote. We elect a board of directors who employs a trained
manager to operate the business for us.
At the end of each year’s operations we check to see if any margin is left over from
payments we have made for services we used. Since we are operating at cost, any
thing left over is an overpayment which we refund to ourselves on the basis of.
how much we paid during the year. If our co-od business needs more capital, we
leave these refunds for awhile as a non-interest-bearing investment.
We like the co-op way of doing business, too.
