PENNSYLVANIA PRISON
IS SET ON FIRE BY GROUP
OF RIOTING CONVICTS
Screaming curses and shouting
for prison reforms, more than 1,-
000 convicts rioted at Western
State Penitentiary Sunday night,
setting fire to the sprawling prison
and seizing five guards as hos
tages.
At 10:20 p. m. nearly 2 1-2 hours
after the outbreak, Warden John
Claudy said one guard had been
freed and prisoners told him none
of the others had been hurt. At the
same time he reported the fire un
der control.

TWO BIBLES USED IN
INAUGURATION EVENT

he is sworn in.
One, a Bible he used yhile a ca
det at West Point and which was
presented to him on his graduation
from the academy in 1915. The
other, as previously announced, the
historic George Washington Bible.

Heil, 58, has decided to marry his
former mother-in-law,, Mrs. Emma
Waterman, 65.
I Mrs. Waterman's husband died
j two years ago and her daughter,
Delores, divorced Heil in 1942.
The Heil's 14-year-old son will be
Mrs. Waterman’s step-son as well
as her grandson, and Heil will be
his former wife’s step-father.

Ft. Benning Free of
Tax Hit by Judge Fort
Columbus, Jan. 14—Judge T.
Hicks Fort. Chattahoochee judicial
circuit, hit sales of liquor at Fort
Benning without payment of state
tax in comments at a meeting
Tuesday.
Speaking at a meeting of Negro
leaders to discuss the upswing in
cuttings and stabbing among Ne
groes, the judge said State Revenue
Commissioner Charles Redwine had
told him liquor was being sold at
the local post and not a dime of
state tax was paid.
Redwine told him something
ought to be done about it, but
that “it is a big job tackling Uncle
Sam.”
