The Gordon-Carson Chapter, UDC^
sponsored a Memorial Day program
at Reynolds High school Friday.
Mrs. W. T. Bankston of Roberta,
president of the chapter, was mas
ter of ceremonies.
Mrs. John Mims welcomed the
members of the UDC to RHS. The
program was opened by singing
America. Rev. W. M. Flanders gave
the invocation. Miss Tempie Hill
played a piano composition by
Chopin. Mrs. Clifford Whatley intro
duced the guest speaker, Rev. J. S.
Winn, pastor of Roberta Baptist
church, who made the Memorial
address.
Mrs. D. W. Harp awarded the
prizes given by the Gordon-Carson
Chapter for the best essays written
on Sidney Lanier, “Poet of the
South.” The following were winners,
5th grade, Dianne Powell with An
nie Brunson second; 6th grade, Re
becca Mims with Clifton McDaniel
second; 7th grade, Marvin Mont
gomery with Rollin Stevens, sec
ond; and 8th grade, Jacquelin Cum
mings with Carol Hartley second.
There was a total of 73 essays
