Seventh Streets had become virtual
ly abandoned and neglected, and
was a hangout for "vandals” and
other undesirable elements.
He asked that the legislature di
rect the city to move all bodies to
a special area near the entrance
to Rose Hill cemetery, which would
set aside as a memorial plot for the
"founding citizens of Macon.”
The old cemetery was laid out in
the original plot of the city and
was used as a burying ground for
] the city’s citizens until 1840, when
i Rose Hill cemetery was dedicated.
I The cemetery fell into disrepair,
and in 1870 the city passed an or
dinance forbidding further burial
there. The surrounding area de
veloped there.
Morgan said the city would bear
costs in moving the graves. He
told the legislators that at present
the city had no specific use in mind
for the old plot.
