Counties Have Appealed
| For Federal Assistance

I Gov. Griffin has declared a
state of emergency in 28 drought-
stricken Georgia counties and has
appealed to President Eisenhower
for federal assistance.
The governor acted on recom
mendation of the Georgia Depart
ment of Agriculture’s disaster com
mittee, which met in Athens.
He said state resources are in
adequate to relieve "the increasing
seriousness of the situation.” He
asked the President to make the
area in central and east Georgia
eligible for federal drought relief.
A farm official said that if the
President takes the requested ac
tion, farmers would be able to buy
hay at reduced prices and obtain
some assistance in buying grain
for livestock.

Three Persons Receiving
Medal for Bravery
Washington, D. C. — The Inter
state Commerce Commission has
announced it will present Railroad
Medals of Honor on two Southern
trainmen.
The medals, authorized by .Con
gress in 1945, are awarded to per
sons who risked their own lives
to saye others in connection with
railroad operations.
The two new awards, the 71st
and 72nd to be- made in 53 years
will go to H. F. Poole, Birmingham
Ala., a switchman for the Birming
ham Belt Railroad and Lee Roy
Hodges of Folkston, Ga., an as
sistant signal maintainer for the
Atlantic Coast Line.
ICC Chairman H. G. Freas will
make the awards.
Heavy Snow Blanketed
North Middle Georgia
During Week End
All highways near and north of
Dahlonega were snowed in Satur
day night as one of the worst
storms in year-s gathered momen
tum in the North Georgia moun
tains.
The State Patrol said Neels Gap
and Woody’s Gap also were closed
because of snow and ice.
Portions of Ga. Highways 52, and
76 and.U.J3. Highways 129, 19, 41
and 27 were iced over in the north
ern part of the state.
Fulton Lovell, director of the
State Game and Fish Department
said a controlled doe hunt would
be staged in north Georgia as
scheduled. He reported 2% inches
of snow in the area and suggested
hunters use chains on their cars
or travel in four-wheel drive ve
hicles.
S80 Billion Ike's Estimate
Of Government Spending
Washington, D. C. — President
Eisenhower sketched out a 1959
legislative program Monday that
may push federal spending up to
$80 billion.
With Eisenhower presiding, Re
publican congressional leaders got
a briefing on legislative and
budget prospects at a White House
conference.
They came away figuring that
spending in the new budget will
go above $79.2 billion estimated
for the present fiscal year which
ends June 30.
Prominent Americus Man
Killed in Florida Wreck
Americus, Ga. — H. G. Graham
Ona, Fla., former Americus citizen
was killed instantly in an automo
bile accident Saturday night near
his home.
Graham’s wife was injured in
the wreck as well as the driver
and one other passenger. Mrs.
Graham was taken to a hospital in
Ona suffering from a broken
shoulder and torn ribs.
Survivors include the wife and
several children; a mother five
sisters and a brother.

Building permits issued at Co
lumbus last week were reported
totaling $304,104.
This represented new construc
tion, and instalations, alterations,
remodeling, and additions to exist
ing houses and commercial build
ings in the city and in the county.
Columbus’ part of the grant to
tal was $172,304, and Muscogee's
portion was $131,800.

Contract Signed for
Modem Air Terminal
Atlanta, Ga. — Atlanta has
contracted for a $9,677,889 air
terminal building.
The aldermanic board unani
mously approved the contract, the
largest in the city’s history. May
or Hartsfield signed it immediate
ly afterwards.
Blount Bros. Construction Co. of
Montgomery, Ala., will erect the
terminal at the Atlanta Airport in
