What Is The Largest
“Farm Group”
In Georgia?
104,063 Farm Families Who Regularly Save
Trading Stamps Are The Biggest
) (< Farm Group” in Georgia.
America’s farm families are
traditic dly thrifty. The same
pattern of thrift is found in
Georgia. It is only natural,
therefore, that the response of
Georgia farm families to one
of the oldest forms of thrift
• — the trading stamp — is so
noticeable.
j Today, about 104,063 farm
families save them. You might
also say that these savers con
stitute the largest single farm
; group in the state.
| During 1957 alone, thou
sands of dollars worth of trad
ing stamp merchandise went
into farm households in the
state, and every 2 seconds a
I farm family is redeeming trad
ing stamps, s

There is still another side —
direct income for farmers. Dur
ing 1957 the industry pur
chased $941,000 worth of
primary materials that go into
the manufacture of merchan
dise for stamp redemption.
No one can contemplate
these facts and fail to realize
that both personally and eco
nomically the trading stamp
industry is a meaningful and
welcome force in the life of
our state. —

Better Race Relations
Urged by Atlanta Judy
Atlanta, Ga. — A grand jury
called Saturday for a creation of
permanent committees of white
and Negro citizens in the. Atlanta
area to lift the racial curtain it
said has descended upon the com
munity.
The Fulton county grand jury
said in a special presentment that
it was especially “apprehensive of
the economic chaos which will in
evitably result if the current im
passe in racial relations is not
soon resolved.”
The jurors also urged that
"elected public officials refrain
from name calling and inflamma
tory statements” and that they
realistically examine their posi
tions in the light of recent judicial
decisions “and if found untenable,
they jseek to guide our citizens to
find workable solutions to our
problems.”
The statement was the third is
sued in successive week ends by
groups of citizens concerned over
the Atlanta racial situation and
the possibility that the public
schools might be closed under
state law should federal courts or
der integration.
Last week end more than two-
thirds of the fulltime members of
the Emory University faculty issu
ed a statemnt opposing the clos
ing of public schools anywhere in
the United States. The faculty of
the Methodist co-educational uni
versity numbers about 360.
The week end before, 311 Atlan
ta area clergymen signed a sec
ond manifesto calling for the ap
pointment of an interracial com
mission to help maintain harmony
and good will in the integration
crisis.
The statement also reaffirmed
details of the first manifesto is
sued about a year ago. The docu-
j ment called for obedience to law,
preservation of public schools, pro
tection of free speech and main
tenance of communications be
tween white and Negro leaders.

waii as local winner in this year’s

COMPANY MANNERS FOR
DOGS
By Bob Bartos
Prominent Dog Authority
How does your dog greet
guests? Does he leap at them in
a frenzy of sheer delight? Or
does he meet them at the door
with such barks of pleasure that
human greetings go unheard?
While you may consider such
unbounded enthusiasm for your
friends amusing, you mustn’t
forget that all people don’t
share your sentiments. So any
one with a dog that doesn’t
have company manners should
teach hie pet (1) not to jump up
on people; and (2) not to bark
uproariously the minute the
doorbell rings and guests ap
pear.
The first thing a dog should
learn is obedience and the
meaning of the word No. If he
persists in jumping up, push
him off balance with your knee
and say No emphatically.
Barking is a delicate prob
lem, for you’ll still want your
pet to perform as a watchdog.
It is best to break him only of
the habit of promiscuous or
nuisance barking by teaching
him the meaning of the com-,
mand Nol Quiet! Have a friend
or one of the family stand out
side and ring the bell while you
stand near the dog, armed with
a folded newspaper. The minute
he lets out a bark, throw the
papir in his direction to startle
him at the same instant you
utter the command, No! Quiet!
Keep up the training until he
understands and responds
promptly to the command.

Feeding Tip: Your dog may
shed excessively because of
many factors such as weather
(season), environment, manage
ment, general health or in
heritance. By feeding him a top
grade of commercially prepared
dog food such as Friskies, you
can be certain that he is getting
all the necessary known nutri
ents for good coat.
