Winder, Ga. — Attorney Marvin
Pierce says the $2,000 he allegedly
defrauded from Jackson county
was a bona fide attorney’s fee.
Pierce and Judge M. B. Clnkscale
were arrested Friday under an in
dictment. charging they conspired
to defraud the county of this
amount in the guise of legal fee.
Pierce, in a prepared statement
said he was retained by County
Commission Chairman Roy White-
head to serve as attorney in sell
ing $150,000 worth of bonds to fi
nance a county hospital anrl health
center.
A Jackson county citizens com
mittee charged in a disbarment
petition filed against Clinkscale
that. Whitehead was involved with
Clinkscale and Pierce in the con
spiracy.
The widow on an Atlanta the
ater equipment executive was
killed in Atlanta Thursday and her
daughter critically injured when a
trailer truck crashed into and de
molished the car in which they
were riding.
Twelve teen-age members from
Atlanta’s Junior Achievement Pro
gram are delegates to the Nation
al Junior Achievement Manage
ment Conference this week on Wre
campus of the University of Indi
ana in Bloomington.
The Jekyll Island Authority has
approved lease of the island’s air
strip to Dr. R. H. Thompson of
Brunswick. Thompson agreed to
stock 100 octane gasoline at the
airstrip and to keep a mechanic on
duty here at all times.
Forgiven of everything except
what his playing dead cost the
county, L. E. Pettis was released
from the Laurens county jail Mon
day, a free man.
Grant Chambliss of Lizella was
detained in Bibb county jail re
cently on a charge of assault with
intent to murder after a Saturday
night shooting incident.

Sidney H. West, 93, former vice

ka’s first railroad, died in a pri

He was formerly of Rockford, 111.
He moved to Atlanta about 14
years ago.
Steven Rockefeller and his story
book Norwegian bride left by plane
for New York Sunday. It was three
years ago to the day that Steven’s
wife, Anne Marie, left Norway to
be a maid in the home of the
Rockefellers.
Butts county is planning its big
gest Industrial Day next month,
according to R. J. Watwins, co-
chairman of the publicity commit
tee said. Sponsored by the Butts
County Junior Chamber of Com
merce, the event is set for Sept. 16.
J. F. Thigpen, director of FHA in
Atlanta says he is informed by
J. II. Zimmerman, commissioner of
FHA, that during fiscal 1959, FHA
distributed cash refunds totalling
$11,401,000 among 102,529 families
that have paid off insured mort
gages on homes.
The recreation program for the
youth of Jeff Davis county has
concluded its first year of operation
with a total of 171 different boys
and girls, ages 5-14, having partici
pated, A number of older boys and
girls also participated, but no
jegistery was kept on them.
At Toms River, N. J., eight per
sons died Sunday trapped in a fire
in the Ocean County jail while
many others survived only because
firemen and wreckers tore and
burned down screens and bars on
second floor windows. Twelve oth
er persons were injured, including
seven inmates, four firemen and
a Navy civilian.

An executive of a big depart
ment store recently had something
to say about how retailers can
move goods, particularly during
the so-called “summer slump.” He
put it in a jingle:
"Early to bed; early to rise,
Work like the devil and advertise”
Then he dealt with newspapers
as an advertising media: "News
paper circulation stays up in the
the summer. There is no appreci
able change in the number of pa
pers distributed and this means
that our advertising will get full
readership and may even be more
effective, because people are more
relaxed and have more time to
read.”

FILES SUIT AT DARIEN
FOR WIFE NO. THREE
Darien, Ga. — Tobacco million-
j aire R. J. Reynolds’ third marriage
was on the rocks Friday after seven
years.
Reynolds, who lives in his own
island, Sapelo, off the Georgia
coast at Darien, filed suit for di
vorce in McIntosh County Superior
court. He charged mental cruelty.
His wife, the former Muriel Mart-
son of Toronto, Canada was re
ported in Paris when the suit was
filed. Their estrangement began in
recent months.
THREE PERSONS KILLED
NEAR SHELLMAN IN WRECK
Shellman, Ga. — Three persons
were killed in the headon crash of
a truck and a Florida-bound auto
10 miles north of Shellman.
Sheriff Faircloth identified the
dead as Otha Burke, 28, driver of
the truck; Mrs. Thomas Williams
of Sharpesburg and an unidentified
15 year old Negro maid in the
Williams car.
Dr. Brantley Resigns
Position at Mercer
Dr. R. L. Brantley, vice president
of Mercer University for the past
three years, has accepted the po
sition of executive secretary of the
Education Commission of the South
ern Baptist Convention, it was an
nounced recently.
Dr. Brantley and his family will
move Sept. 1 to Nashville, where
the office of the commission is lo
cated.
II CASES OF POLIO
BIBB COUNTY REPORTS
Macon, Ga. — The Macon-Bibb
County area now has 11 confirmed
cases and two suspected cases of
polio.
The local chapter of the National
Foundation reports the number of
polio cases for the current period
and says that there has been one
death from the diseas this year,
Hilbert Gavel, 33. He had not had
(he Salk vaccine shots.
Stone Mountain
Park Group List
$1140 for Coast Trip
Atlanta, Ga. — It cost the state
$1,140 to send three officials on an
inspection trip to the West Coast
where they were seeking ideas for
Stone Mountain Memorial Park.
More than two thirds of the ex
pense, however, was the cost of
round trip air transportation for the
three.
The three officials who made
the trip are Agriculture Commis
sioner Phil Campbell; Matt Mc
Whorter, who is chairman of the
Public Service Commission, and
chairman of the Stone Mountain
Memorial Assn., and Scott Candler
executive secretary of the Stoie
Mountain Memorial Assn. Mr.
Campbell is a member of the com
mission.
The purpose of their trip was de
scribed on expense accounts as
being to “inspect park and enter
tainment facilities at Los Angeles
in connection with perfecting plans
for Stone Mountain Memorial
Park.”
Star Rating Given
Taylor County by
Ga. Alumni Society
Taylor was one or five star
counties singled out by the Uni
versity of Georgia Alumni Society
for its showing in the 1959 Fund-
Membership Drive.
Under the direction of J. H.
Neisler, Taylor had 28 out of 65
alumni to become active Society
members for the current year. The
goal set for this county for 1959
was 27 members.
Assisting Mr. Neisler in the
drive were Messrs Sink Marshall,
J. J. Childree and H. G. Cheek.
The other four counties to attain
star ratings are Morgan, Schley
Treutlen and Twiggs.
Durng the first six months of
1959, more than 3100 alumni, par
ents and friends of the University
contributed $52,000 towards the
academic program ofthe university.
The 1959 goal is 10,000 active
members with $150,000 total con
tribution.
The University, most of which
will gof or faculty salary supple
ments.
