No Spring
Due For Most
Of Country
(By UP International)
Heavy snow, thunder storms,
floods, freezing rain and the threat
of tornades erased thoughts of
spring from most of the nation
Sunday.
Tornado warnings were issued
for parts of west and north central
Texas and southwest and central
Oklahoma.
Chicago’s battered South Side was
still reeling from the effects of a
tornado which bounced Saturday
nightt along a 17-miie path, kill
ing one, injuring 115 and causing
millions of dollars in property
damage.
Another small twister carved a
four mile swalh thru New Buffalo,
Mich., demolishing farm buildings
and killing a cow.
Severe thunderstorms with hail
and damaging winds were fore
cast thru 6 p. m. in Oklahoma and
Kansas.
Heavy snow warnings were post
ed for central Nebraska and north
west Kansas.
A storm front trailing from New
England to New Mexico brought
snow to the Rockies, rain to the
flood-racked Southeast, showers as
far north as Ohio Valley, and snow
to the northern Great Lakes.
Miss Taylor’s
Condition Grave
London, Eng. — Beautiful Eliza
beth Taylor, stricken with pneu
monia and weakened by anemia,
fought desparately for her life
early Tuesday surrounded by a
battery of medical equipment and
the prayers of her family and
friends.
The condition of the actress, 29,
was officially described as still
grave but slightly improved.
She was being drip fed thru her
ankle.
An electronic lung was helping
her to breathe thru a tube inserted
in her neck.
Under sedation, the star of
many movie roles frequently laps
ed into unconsciousness.
But from time to time, unable to
speak because of the breathing
tube, she scribbled a note to her
husband, singer Eddie Fisher 31,
who was at her bedside.

Boiler Explodes
At Dent Poultry Co.
Buena Vista, Ga.
A boiler at the Dent Poultry Co.
in Buena Vista exploded Feb. 25th
causing damage estimated at $2,-
ooo.
Fortunately the plant was not in
operation and no one was nearby
at the time, said Mr. J. L. Dent,
the company’s president.
Though the boiler had safety
valves, silt in water lines probab
ly caused the stoppage and the
exposion Mr. Dent said.
A new boiler was installed and
the building repaired so that the
85 employees of the establisment
were able to go back work Tues
day morning.
Approximately 25,000 broilers are
processed each day at the Dent
plant.

proved for the initial distribution
!of federal surplus food, it was an
nounced by J. L. Maner, com-
'modity director.
Maner said the first distribution
is still tentatively set for March
adding that a definite date would
not be announced until enough
surplus foor arrives to handle the
needy families already approved.
No further applications will be ac
cepted for the first distribution,
Maner added.
Three commodities have already
arrived — milk, lard and rice.
Other commodities are expected
in the near future.
Only six commodities will be
available for the first few months,
however. Maner said this would
likely be increased to 10 commodi
ties a bit later.
Farmers Urged
To Report Grain
Acreage at Once
The ASC Office is seeking to ob
tain a report for each farm on the
acreage of corn, oats, barley, and
grain sorghum planted in 1956 and
1960. This information is needed
by Friday (tomorrow) and is in
in connection with the feed grain
program now being considered by
Congress. ,
Taylor County has been desig
nated as a major grain producing
county and the ASC Office is re
quired to obtain a report from
every farm in the county regardless
of whether they might desire to
participate in any feed grain pro
gram that may be enacted.
The report now being obtained is
not an application to participate.
As soon as action is completed by
Congress on this program, full de
tails will be furnished each oper
ator and it is presumed that appli
cations by interested producers
will then be taken.

Washington, D. C. — The Senate
has voted to authorize 73 new fed
eral judges — the biggest single
addition ever proposed in the fed
eral judiciary.
“These are choice political jobs”
said Sen. E. M. Dirkson, R-Ill. who
led a losing Republican fight to
delay action on the measure.
Dirkson told the Senate the ini
tial cost of creating a new district
judgeship, including expenses for
the first year, is $90,000. The first
year cost of adding a judge to the
U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals, he
said, is $72,600.
The bill which the Senate ap
proved by voice vote and sent to
the House would set up 63 addi
