Talmadge Calls
For Cutback In
U. S. Foreign Aid
ATLANTA—A "serious" cutback
in U. S. foreign aid spending has
been proposed by Georgia’s U. S.
Sen. Herman E. Talmadge as "the
best solution" to this country’s bal
ance of payments crisis.
Appearing on the Citizens’ Coun
cil Forum, a weekly series of re
corded interviews programs pro
duced in Washington and distribut
ed to television and radio stations
throughout the nation, the Georgia
junior senator described the cur
rent foreign aid spending as “a glo
bal WPA project.” Said he:
"Oud dollar deficit each year is
nearly exactly equal to our foreign
aid spending. The United States
has spent more than $80-billion on
foreign aid since the end of World
War II. Since the days of Marshall
Plan our foreign aid program has
degenerated into a global WPA pro
ject.
"We have made contributions to
104 nations of all types and cha
racters, including Communist coun
tries. We’ve given $2-billion to
Communist Yugoslavia, and an
other $1 - bill ion to Communist Po
land.
“But I think the most ridiculous
project the Senate has ever approv
ed was the one to restore the an
cient historical monuments in the
Nile River Valley in Africa - in the
Sudan and in Nasser’s Egypt. Nas
ser works hand and glove with the
Communists, and has declared
time after time his hostility to the
United States.
“The Sphinx and the Pyramids
were standing in Egypt before
Christ walked on the face of the
earth. They have seen the comings
and goings of the Caesars, the Na-
poleans, Hitler’s Afrika Korps, the
Mohammedan hordes, and they
stood there.
“But now, the United States Se
nate thinks we ought to take tax
payers’ money - money that this
country does not have - and go in
to a hostile country to spend mon
ey on something that’s been stand
ing for over 3,000 years. It’s really
preposterous when you think of it.”

For every Member. . .
. the best possible
electric service at
the lowest possible cost!"
That is a goal toward which a Rural Electric
System constantly strives. Much time is devoted
to maintenance, system studies, planning—plan
ning ways to improve service ... to provide for
the ever increasing demand for electricity . . .
; Good planning is necessary to provide good
service . . . and to make every dollar go a long,
long way; for the money borrowed to build our
Rural Electric System must be paid back, with
interest, to our banker, the REA.
And, as more and more uses are found for an
ever increasing amount of low-cost electricity in
rural areas, so, too, is a greater market created
for goods and services bought from folks in the
cities and towns . . . Rural Electrification is good
for ALL Americans!
