ATLANTA—Adequate hospitaliza
tion for Georgia veterans is a prob
lem that increases as time goes on,
says Veterans Service Director Pete
Wheeler.
With the state’s veteran populat
ion both steadily increasing and
aging, the need for additional hos
pital and domiciliary facilities con
tinues to climb, Wheeler reports.
Peacetime servicemen are rapidly
adding to the state’s current total
of 450,000 veterans.
The average age of Georgia’s 139,
000 World War I veterans is now
65, and World War II veterans, who
number 271,000, are around 42
years old.
The immediate hospital problem
is centered at the VA Hospital in
Atlanta, where plans have been ap
proved for the construction of a new
580-bed hospital in July, 1963.
“In the meantime,” Wheeler com
mented, “an increasingly large num
ber of veterans are being turned
away at the present Atlanta VA
Hospital due to lack of beds.”
He said he recently received a
letter from the Atlanta hospital
manager saying the demand for
hospitalization there is “critical”,
forcing them to admit only the
“sickest of the sick” and asking
;others to return to their homes un-
jtil beds are available.
Wheeler said these crowded con
ditions contiinue even though the
VA has attempted to make better
use of existing available beds by
performing certain before-and-after
medical services on an outpatient
basis.
Wheeler noted that the Atlanta
