Commerce Dept.
Offers Help to
Small Business
SHERIFF'S SALE
Petition for Charter
Mother Bound Over
In Gun Death
Atlanta, Ga. — The U. S. Gov
ernment is the world’s largest
buyer of goods and services and as
such, reportedly controls a poten
tial $90 billion market for private
business.
How much of this is going to
small business concerns in Ga?
Admittedly, not nearly enough.
They, like others wanting to sell
to Uncle Sam, are faced with these
problems:
How to learn the government’s
buying methods? How to find out
which agencies and which pur
chasing offices buy the products or
services it can supply? How to ob
tain the opportunity to compete for
their contracts and orders?
But now the Ga. Dept, of Com
merce, the state’s No. 1 Agency
for promoting a more profitable
commonwealth, can assist firms
desiring to obtain government
.business, according to Jack J-
Minter, director.
“Liaison is maintained with
federal purchasing offices, or
procurement offices as they are
generally known, and with the
Small Business Administration
which work closely with the prin
cipal purchasing agencies of the
federal government in developing
policies and procedures that will
lead to increased contract awards
to small firms,” he said.
The SBA also provides a wide
range of services to individual
small firms to help obtain and
carry out government contracts.
Procurement agencies within the
Department of Defense and Gener
al Services Administration main
tain an “open door” policy to all
individuals, partnerships and cor
porations having the capabilities
and desires to participate in meet
ing material requirements of the
federal government, it was pointed
out.
The Ga. Dept, of Commerce, Min
ter said, can provide firms with
these assistances:
Information about government
business opportunities, counseling
on how to do business with the
Government, actions to be taken,
locatione of contracting offices,
how to get on bidders’ mailing list
how and where to obtain specifi
cations, how to establish govern
ment consumer demand and pro
mote sales, how to introduce new
products and how to keep informed
of current bidding opportunities.
$16 Million Ports
Expansion Planned
To Lure Industries
Atlanta, Ga.—Gov. Vandiver dis
closed plans Monday for a $16
million expansion of inland and
deepwater Georgia ports and added
a pledge to place the State Com
merce department on a profession
al basis.
The expansion will be financed
by new issues of bonds, and Van
diver said, will give prospective
Industries new outlets for around-
the-world trade.
Five south and middle Georgia
cities figure in the expansion. They
are Bainbridge, Augusta, Columbus,
Brunswick and Savannah.
Ports Authority Chairman Robert
O Norman said that the bonds will
be sold by the state and guaranteed
by the state for the first time, in
dicating that interest rates will he
cheaper than they have been when
only the authority stood behind
them.
