Georgia Raps ‘Poison’
Label on Turpentine
Washington, D. C. — A Georgia
spokesman for the turpentine in
dustry has told the Food and Drug
Administration a requirement that
all turpentine be labeled “poison”
would destroy the industry.
But a consumers’ representative
urged the FDA to impose such
regulations. FDA finished hearings I canning
this week on the proposals to re
quire warning labels on thousands ,
of household chemical products.
J. L. Smith, Valdosta, said the
FDA did not have the power to
classify turpentine as “highly
toric.” Speaking for the American
Turpentine Farmers Assn. Cop. he
said labeling turpentine as a pois
on would wreck the industry.

Up with a nebulous, eiglit-point
program centered on an inter
national conference instead of
imposition of import quotas and
were dashed when the State De
partment announced the pro
posal it intends to put before
that meeting.
The Department’s idea of solv
ing the problem is to seek a
system of voluntary textile im
port quotas based on the record
1960 levels for all areas except
7M * :> Ptu
Hong Kong which would take a
30 per cent cut and Japan which
would get a five per cent in
crease. Even those quotas would
be increased with each succed-
ing year.
A State Department official
hiding behind the cloak of ano
nymity gave an interview in
which he stated that it was only
because of “political pressure”
that a conference was being-
held. He accused the textile in
dustry of having an “insatiable
appetite" and engaging in “hys
terics” and maintained that the
“developing nations must be sat
isfied that the conference is be
ing approached in a liberal spir
it." His entire attitude was one
of favoring foreign over Ameri
can interests. ,
* * • ----- —
NO ONE WOULD argue with
the position that it is important
for the United States to mairr-’
tain good relations with the
textile-producing areas of the
world; but, by the same token,,
no fair-minded individual
agree that they should be
achieved at the expense of an'
industry regarded by the De
fense Department as essential ’
t0 national d ,-fhse fhd looked
to by almost7)00,000 Americans ,
as their source of livelihood.
The only reason for having a
State Department is to repre-^
sent American interests abroad.
When it ceases to perform that
function and seeks instead to
represent foreign interests in
the United States, it is time for
some drastic overhauling. From
the facts at hand it would ap
pear that this country’s greatest
need today is for an American
Desk at the State Department.
