Southern Frozen
Foods Sponsors
Open House
Montezuma, Ga. — Recently ex
panded facilities will soon make
Southern Frozen Foods Inc., in
Montezuma the largest single
packer of southern frozen vegeta
bles in the United States.
Acid in recognition of the com
pany’s strong influence on the
farm economy of this section of
the State, Gov. Vandiver and Lt.
Gov. Byrd spoke at culmination of
the open house festivities at the
plant July 1718.
From Monday noon to Tuesday
noon a steady stream of invited
guests visited the basic plant, thru
which a Niagara of collards, turnip
greens, okra, blackeyed peas, green
beans and new potatoes has flowed
during the past 15 years.
They inspected the production
techinques and storage space add
ed this year, and they learned that
the plant's anticipated volume of
business for 1961 tops $7 million.
Nearing completion is a new 12.5
million pound storage warehouse,
a belt freezer and three new pro
duction limes. The belt freezer, de
signed to keep abreast of the new
packing techniques, has a capacity
of approximately 7,000 pounds an
hour and will freeze such free-
flowing items as peas beans and
okra.
In 1960 Southern Frozen Foods
was the first packer im the United
States to put Southern vegetables
in a transparent, family-size, poly
ethylene bag.
Southern Frozen Foods had its
beginning in June, 1946, and was
the brain-child of three Momtezu-
ma businessmen, W. H. McKenzie
president and now, C. G. Hauga-
book and J. B. Easterlin.
They had in mind a way of pre
serving and marketing the peaches
grown in such quantities in Macon
and surrounding counties. In 1947
they added strawberries and pi-
mientoes. In 1948 they began freez
ing southern vegetables for which
the plant is now nattiomally
known.
