Talmadge Blasts
JFK For Naming
NAACP Attorney
Atlanta, Ga. — The Kennedy ad
ministration has delivered another
solar plexus blow to the South.
This one was in the form of an
appointment by President Kennedy
of a Negro NAACP lawyer to mem
bership on the Civil Rights Com
mission.
Over the protest of Dixie sena
tors, including Sens. Russell and
Talmadge, the Senate has now
confirmed the president’s nomina
tion of Spottswood Robinson III, a
Negro and dean of the Howard
University Law School who has
served as counsel for the NAACP
in a number of desegregation law
suits.
At the same time the Senate
confirmed the nomination of Erwin
Griswold, dean of the Harvard Law
School, as a commission member
and Bery Bernhard as the commis
sion’s staff director.
Addressing the presiding officer
of the Senate, Talmadge said:
“Mr. President, I wish the record
to show that the junior Senator
from Ga. voted against the confir
mation of these nominees. It has
been his consistent position that
the Commission on Civil Rights not
only is unnecessary but actually
creates more division than it does
good. Its record to date is totally
devoid of any definite contribution
whatsoever to the advancement of
the welfare of the American peo
ple.
“Sitting as a member of what
■was created by Congress to be an
impartial agency for determina
tion of facts, his position is rough
ly equivalent to that of a litigant
permitted to sit as a judge on his
own case.”
