Williams to Fight
$69,610 Claim
Atlanta, Ga. — Former State
Revenue Commissioner T. V. Wil
liams will blame Gov. Vandiver
and Revenue Commisioner Dixon |
Oxford for the loss of $69,610 em- •
bezzled by a department official
during the Griffin administration. |
Williams claims in in a court,
petition that they and not he 1
should be held responsible for the I
loss of funds stolen by Jim Jones |
former head of the Motor Fuel Tax ,
Refund Unit.
Williams contends in the peti
tion that Gov. Vandiver and Ox-
for were notified of the Jones
shortage and they could have acted
to seize the official’s assets “in sat
isfaction of the funds stolen by
him.”
“In violation and dereliction of
their official duties, both Vandi
ver and Oxford negligently and
carelessly failed to take any action
to seize said assets and recoup the
Joss resulting from thefts of said
Jones,” the petition claims.
Williams’ criticism of the gov
ernor and Oxford is part of his an
swer to a suit the slate filed
against him in June which conten
ded that he as revenue commis
sioner, should be held accountable
for any misuse of public funds un
der his control and management.
Williams’ bondsman also was
named defendant to the action.
Williams also claims that the
suit should not have been filed
in Fulton Civil Court, since he is
a legal resident of Coffee county.
He also contends that the state
cannot “impose vicarious liability”
for the acts of his former em
ployes.
