What could possibly be one of
the largest deer-slaying rings in
Georgia history has been cracked
open by State Game and Fish Com
mission rangers, officers reported
Saturday.
Arrested and charged with the
misdemeanor of killing deer at
night and out of season and with
a light were Earnest W. Hall, Ro
bert E. Hall and Felton Hall, all of
Rte. 1, Hampton, and Bill Wilker-
som, 120 Lakeside Drive, Griffin, po
lice officers said.
They were arrested in a butcher
ing truck near midnight on a road
between Jackson and Monticello in
Jones County, officers said. The
truck they were driving, according
to Oheif Wildlife Ranger Bob Bak
er, was equipped with racks, had a
powerful headlight swinging a
full 180 degrees.
It carried four automobile batter
ies. A 30.6 caliber high-powered
rifle was found in the truck along
with four boxes of ammunition with
various types of loads, but silver
tips and solids were among them,
officers said, plus a total of 15 seal-
beam headlights were carried by
the men.
Butcher knives were in abundan
ce, according to Baker, who was as
sisted in the arrests by Rangers
Johnson, Quick and Tillman.
Game and Fish Department offi
cials have had evidence of illegal
slayings in Jones, Jasper, Henry and
Butts counties. Three other trucks
came to the scene offering assis
tance to those arrested according
to Baker.
