THE BUTLER HERALD, BUTLER, GEORGIA, MAY 31, 1962
School Problems
The Committee for Better Educa
tion of Taylor County Children re
quest publication of the following
article:
On May 1, 1961, a survey commit
tee made up of experts in the edu
cational field completed a report
to the Taylor County Board of Edu
cation. This report, along with its
recommendations, was requested by
the Taylor County Board of Educa
tion. Following are the recommen
dations pertaining to facilities for
white children in the county:
1. The committee recognizes the
advantage the student has in at
tending a larger high school where
a broader program of studies can
be offered. The new emphasis being
placed on advanced courses in
mathematics, science, and modern
foreign language makes it neces
sary that this county make changes
to keep up with progress being
made in other school systems.
Taylor county has its share of
bright students who should be given
the advantages that can be offered
in larger schools. Butler High
school, at present, is not offering
any modern language and only one
class in Latin. Little or no work is
offered in either music or art.
The combined ADA in grades nine
ten, eleven, twelve for the first
seven months of 1960-61 in both
schools was only 271 pupils. With
less attendance than this a school
cannot earn enough teachers to of
fer anything like an adequate high
school program. As long as the two
high schools are continued in opera-
tio n there is no hope of offering
an adequate program in either of
the schools.
The committee recommends that
the 9th-12th grade pupils at Rey
nolds be transferred to the Butler
High school. No additional building
will be required for these students
since there are available four more
rooms than the present attendance
earns at the Butler school center.
A wider curriculum could be pro
vided for all high school pupils.
The name of the school could be
changed to Taylor County High
School.
Tile should be provided for the
exposed concrete floors in the But
ler school building.
The room-fired gas heaters are
not approved-type heat in the ele
mentary school. They are not vented
and constitute a hazard to the chil
dren.
2. There are adequate instruction
al units at the Reynolds Elemen
tary School Center. No additional
construction needed and the ele
mentary students will have the ad
vantage of being given all the ex
tra curricular activities which have
been devoted largely to the high
school. The transfer of the high
school should result in a stronger
program for the elementary chil
dren.
Under general recommendations
the committee reports:
The Board of Education and ad
ministration should work with the
State Highway Board, the County
Commissioners, and any others
concerned to get the entrances and
driveways paved to all the schools.
Similarly, the principals, and
PTA should work together to get
the school sites landscaped and
shrubbery planted. In many cases
grading needs to be done so that
in periods of heavy rain, water will
not come back into the buildings.
The establishment of one county
wide high school for all white chil
dren in grades 9 thru 12 in Taylor
County will help to strengthen the
high school curriculum.
