The Present "Business Prosperity,
Mr. Edward Atkinson, the well
known Boston political economist,
has recently written an article for
the Internalional Review. present
the country will be long continued.
He discusses the panic of ’73 and
its causes, taking the ground that
it was brought about by the spec¬
ulative fever which prevailed just
after the wax - , and which, on ac¬
count of the demoralizing influen¬
ces of an unduly inflated and over
plentiful supply of depreciated
currency, was carried on wildly
and recklessly. At length the con¬
traction of the currency set in, and
then it was discovered that debts
contracted when the paper curren ¬
cy was lowest in value had, when
settling day arrived, to be paid for
in a better currency, at a very
heavy advance the original . .
on
price. This, of course, made mat
ters much worse for the debtor
class, and it was natural that thei-e
should be a general desire on their
partf tra-maratTuii tire inti
currency until their debts were
paid, It was (his feeling which
gave Greenbackism whatever vital
ity it possessed, and which, with
the return of better times, has hap¬
pily died out. Values have once
xnorc^settled down to a gold basis,
and he thinks if Congress will only
place a definite bar to an inflated
currency for the future, we can
look forward with confident eyes.
Mr. Atkinson’s views on this sub
ject axe much more correct than
when he expressed the opinion that
the Southern climate was not suit¬
able for cotton manufacturing, and
U “™”>
es our Southern climate he speaks
of what he knows nothing. The
Baltimore Gazette, speaking of his
position on the commercial pxos
perity of the country and the like¬
lihood of its continuance, says:
‘As Mr. Atkinson points out, not
only has the nation returned to an
honest curi-ency, but the labor of
the country has adapted itself to
the changes and improvements in
productive machinery. There has
been a vast increase in industrial
energy and activity in this country
ia recent years, and the danger at
one time appeared to be that the
production would be too great for
the demand. But it would now
* seem that there is a little danger
Of over production in the near fa
tare. . Our foreign trade is grew
, ing and will probab'y continue to
grow, while the constantly increas¬
ing consumptibn within our own
borders will absorb a large portion
■of the surplus products The de¬
bris of 1873 appears to have been
entirely cleared away, and with
B pecie currency to insure stability
in trade, we can hardly fail to
straight forward in the path
