DIIEP PLOUGHING IN CONN.
A correspondent of die Rulal World
remark 6aa follows; It ia batter to raire
oaf handred bushels of onro on one aore
of ground than fifty bushels per acre oo
two seres. The yield could be double
on nearly every acre of ground in cul
tivation ia the West. What is wanted
is deeper ploughing and better prepar
ation of the soil and more thorough af
ter bultivation. The skimming over
the ground is one of the greatest evils
ia western farming. Plough deep and
then croeaplough deep, and you prepare
food and moisture for the plants and
eoable them to resists the droughts,
and make them laugh and thrive and
bear abundantly.
On the above Moore’s Rural New
Yorker says: “ The positive iteration
of generalities, and especially the em
phasis placed oa deep ploughing for
corn, invites ths suspicion that the
writrr was siring some very plsusable
theories, instead of writing from practi-
Ml experience. It may be under cer
tain circumstances that corn trill do
bettor on deeply ploughed ground'; but
tie never saw such a ease. As for
deep for corn, we
know that this is only theory ; for if
oofa it planted on a nowly turned sod,
afrit should be, oroeeploughing would
only turn the soil uppermost again.
Most probably the writer of the para-
quoted, does not know anything
of the subject wbioh he was discussing,
but has borrowed some plsusable ideas
from the agricultural wisdom always
Boating in the newspapers.
J was reading in the Now York Tri
bune some years ago a correspondent's
manner of dvsrtoying the borer, which
was by the use of hot water. Mr.
tirfeley said be had known for a long
time that hot water would not hqrt a
tree, but he bad beeu waiting for some
one to introduce the anbjeot. His mode
mas to hoe the dirt around the tree and
then apply the hot water. 1 have fre
quently applied hot water where the
borer was low down in the root of the
tree with no harm to the tree, but death
to the borer. The best way ! have
found to destroy borers is to exam.no
the bark and take them out when they
are very small. They exist in a small
cavity in the bark the first year, which
is easily discovered on close examina
tion. The seoond year they commence
on the wood and bore either up or
down, aad are generally easily reach, and
with a knife; but the third year they
have gone deep into the wood; so far,
indeed, that they tun be rowched only
by e wire. They are fully developed
the third year, and leave the tree
through a hole about the sixe of e pipe
stem in a different place from where
they entered.—Maine Farmer.
A great many persons suppose that
an “egg is an egg,’’ or that the richness
of all eggs is the same. But real);
there is just as much difference between
eggs as between tough and tender boef.
Take bens that are almost starved, and
you will find their eggs very week;
when emptied out of the shell ’hey
appear small, pals and flat. Take the
same hens and feed as they should be
fed. especially giving a little “blood
mixed with scalded meal,” adding a
feed now and then of raw or cooked
fresh meat, and as the eggs are poured
4>ut of the shell they will be large, of a
food, strong color, and round. Any
j radical housewife will tell you that
there ia quite a difference in the
Strength or richness of eggs. Again, take
the week or poor eggs and set them ; a
jfi-w will hatch, but the ohicks will show
0 enkness from the start, and quite a
•umber will ohill and die in a few days,
f/hat few do live will be chirping and
ffmoying you every time you see or
(tear them. Take the rich, strong eggs
