In the common oouw of things the
grafting nf an apple upon any other stock
willrhang* in no very |*rceptibledegree
any of the principal characteristics of
the fruit grmhed, and vet we have in
mind many instances of grafting the
Baldwin into a mature tree of the variety
known as "Molten Sweet,” which ia an
exceedingly rich, sweet apple, and also
into another stock where natural fruit
characteristic* was a poor,sour apple.
Th* result was that, when coming to
hearing, the fruit from the two trees
would scarcely be recognised as being
the same variety of fruit, either in form,
color or external quality; for while the
former was an excellent, mild acid nf
unusual richness, the latter was a hard,
harsh acid that was not agreeable to the
taste. If the stuck into which these
•cions were introduced had no influence
upon their growth and productions, we
would like to be informed why the diver
rity in the character of the truit pro
duced. Another case of a different
nature: We had a strong, healthy tre*
of natural fruit that would not mature
its fruit fully belore it commenced to
decay, which would lie upon the tree.
Thia was grafted to Haldwina, and al
though the branches grew vigorously,
and produced in due time an abundance
of fruit it would commence to decay
upon the tree* belore maturity, precisely
as the original fruit had done. Ii there
was no influence of the original stock
upon the growth and productions of the
imerted scions, why was this fruit so
aflected?
Other casee of a similar character
could he mentioned of variation in th*
rumet apple occasioned hy being graded
upon sweet or sour stocks.
We have uu doubt but that the eating
qualities of applrs may be considerably
modified by careful selection at the
time of grafting.
If we wish to diminish the acidity of
any sour apple, we should graft into a
tree known to produce a sweet apple of
good quality, and in ao doing, should ex
pect to secure the desired result; and so,
too, vice versa. It ia certain that the
same variety of apples appear very un
like a* to sixe, color, shape and manner
of growth, which we attribute to the
influence ol the stock upon which they
ar* grafted. It it ia not so why is it the
easo that the Mine variety of anple, from
