The Vice President of the Uni*

been in New York engaged in
consultation devising measures
to cripple the power of the Presi

for a fresh wliuck at the treasury.
This ia a novel kind of business
for a Vice i'resident lo be en

Of the President it is said Sena

as follows: ”That man in the

A HAN DROWNED.
On Tuesday, the 24th ult,
James Childers was drowned near
A. V. P. Jones', in this county.
Mr. Childers, with other neigh
bors, had been helping Mr. Junett
lo repair his mill race, and in the
evening started off on liia mute,
and alter being gone about twen
ty minutes bis male was noticed
not far from where be started,
and as Childers had been drink
ing some before he leit, it was
thought that he had fallen Irom
his horse and could not again
mount it; so Mr. Jones, as we
learn, went to his assistance, but
on approaching the creek, wliieli
was only a lew hundred yards
from Mr. Jones’ house, he found,
to his astonishmoul, Childers ly
ing in the Creek, still astride Ins
saddle, dead. Olliers were called
and efforts mails to restore him
to life, but to no effect. It is
thought that when his mule tried
to drink the saddle turned and
Childers fell and was not able to
recover until strangulation had
extinguished tho vital spark.

Dr. Meramler, of Oartersville,
is creating quite a sensation. We
are iuformed that he is having
wonderful aweeem with his gold
mine eo Long wa*p Greek, la
cutting a tunnel seventy five feet
he struck six veins, each being
very rich. Dr. Memtuler, we are
informed, is clearing from SIOO to
S2OO per month.' Till* looks like
business, atid we hope he may
continue to meet with such luck.
.Nothing can add to thb advan
tage* of our eountky more than
lb# development of our mineral
resources. i- > .
We hope that our eitiaens will
do every thing iu their power to
encourage Dr. Memmler in his
enterprise. He will ?aon be a
citizen of our county, provided he
can be successful in purchasing a
lot On which to build.
Not many days since a young
man in Dr. Memmier’s employ
found a gold arrow, on which was
inscribed the images of an Indian
duel and his two sons. It wus
fully polished, and was worth
about forty dollars.
We look forward with pride to
the day when our mountain conn
try shall be frilly developed and
prove to the world her true
worth.
