Iron is in fact a natural •or.stiturnt of

The offsets of iron nro best seen ia con

She came to town unconscious of the
troubles by hich she would be met. The
rude hand of the law seized tier with its
relentless grasp, and for a time her vision
waa beclouded with the imaginary aigbt of
prisnu walls, iron aagesg etc. In the midst
ofter troubles, when ill seemed dark and
gloomy, a gallant young man of portly
mien and comely appearance, who resem

offered himself a sacrifice on the altar of
patriotism. The demands of the law were
met, and the victim and be who came to
the rescue passed compliments, and all
went “happy as a marriage bell.”
W ith tender touch hit hand she preseed,—
Her eyes great volumes spoke;
She looked at him and he st her,
And neither silence broke.
At last, die said: Ob, man of nerve,
I humbly bow me down.
And own thee king of all the earth;
Come, wear the royal crown.
I would thy joy and sorrow share—
Thy manhood make sublime; —
Accept the offer—do not spurn
This humble gift of mine.
Quoth he: My dear, you are my own;
O’er trifles do not fret;
My Juny-bug shall not be hurt, —
'I his fact don’t you forget,
And he loped home with her armed with

From eight and a half to nine o'clock,

class. Tlieu the examination of Grammar
ensued, which showed a very great proof
of their dilligence and industry, which re

teacher. After an intermission of two
hours, Arithmetic received its proper ex

through their rigidness and show the many

Friday, May 37, tiom eight to eight and

quite a dilligence oil the part of the stu

At ten o’clock Prof. Beck, of Dahlon

necessity of acquiring knowledge, which
was very effectually contrasted with super

we cau say of it is it wa9 just the thing we

very much appreciated.
Prof.- Henley, of Jasper, then gave us a

hope will have no lit tie effect. We feel quite

Seventeen Year Locus®
For two or (hree weeksptnßhe
woods in certain parts of- the
country have been resonant with
the monotonous drumming of so
called locusts. Many of our
younger readers have never be
fore witnessed a visit alio# of
these comuaratively harmless in
sects, and as their history is lin
gular, a short account of
habits will be found interesting
to many.
In the first place they are not
locusts in the true sense, but be
long to a different order— Hcinip
tera— while the locu’st propej be
longs to the order Orthoptera.
The correct name is Oicadw of
which there are several sf'Wes,
the one now paying us a vtsffpH
ing the Cicadir seplendecebt or
seventeen year Cicada, because
they repeat their visits at odriods
oi seventeen yejrs. In the per
lect form they only live slew
weeks, (luring winch time their
chief business is to incfeasfr and
multiply. In their previous states
they pass a much longer .lime,
depending in some measure upon
I he nature and abundance of their
feed.
The female locust is provided
with a sharp instrument with
which she pierces the small twigs
of the oak (and sometimes of
other trees) forming a, series ol
small holes in which th&eggVHro
deposited. A single fetnale will
thus lay four ' or ive huadfed
eggs, after which egerlioHi ike
languishes e 4 diem The twig*
la which the eggs ere fcpMj
coon wither a*(l die Hurt, drop
from the tree, as the locHsvfhae
rally saws liieiu partly off before
leaving them. ’
Tile eggs are ibout on*-twelfth
of an inch long and hatch in from
forty to fifty days. The young
insects, when they burst from the
shell, are about one-sixleoMh ol
an inch long, and smnewhwt grub
like in appearance, being furnish
ed willi six legs. They are very
lively in their movetnenU —al-
most as much so as auis. 'ln a
few minutes they are prompted
by instinct, lo get to the ground,
which they do by deliberately
losing their hold and falling to
the earth. They then immediately
bury themselves in the s-jii.Jieem
ing to follow the
which they perforate
beaks, and thus living cn the
vegetable juices, which consti
tute 1 heir sole nourishment. They
do not usually descend vuv
deeply into the ground, but re
main where the roots afe most
abundant, and the oiriy alteration
to which they are subject during
the whole period of their life in
the soil, is an increase of mze and
gradual development of the wing
cases. As the lime of I heir change
into the perfect winged insect
approaches, they gradually as
cend towards the surface ami
finally issue ul night iu great
numbers, crawl lip the trunks of
trees or other objecls lo which
they firmly fix themselves by
their claws, and prepary lo cast
off their old clothe?. This they
manage lo do afier considerable
effort iiy bursting the skin along
tlie back and withdrawing the
wings and limbs from tlieir sepa
rate cases, leaving the empty
shells entire and allaclied as at
first. Iu a few hours tiie insects
are sufficiently dry and strong lo
fly, and soon commence their
daily serenade. Tlieir music (only
the males sing) is made by liille
kettle drums —one under each
wing—plainly visible and formed
of parchment stretched over cavi
lies.
So far as observed, limy eal
nothing solid, but are provided
with a proboscis for sucking, sim
ilar to dial of tiie honey bee, ami
probably l.ve during Iheir bri*T
honey-moon on vegetable juices,
as do oilier insects ol I his order.
Of course, the idea that the ap
poarance nl the locust-hire bode*
war, famine, or ntlierslirc calam
ity, is only superstition. The W
on the extremity of each wing
may stand as well for wine, wo
men, or whiskey, as for war The
Cicada sometimes lavs its eggs in
the twigs of apple and pear trees,
and in this way causes consider
able injury, as such twigs invari
ably wither and die. But as they
appear only at intervals of seven
teen years they may be consid
ered, on tlie whole, as harmless
insects

add mr testimony in favor ol your lavaU
uable liniment, “Kendall’s -pavin Cure”
In the spiing of 1882 I slipped on the ice
and sprained my right limb at the knee
joint. I was very lame and, at times,
suffered the most excrutiatin? pains. I
wore a bandage on it for over a year, aud
tried most everything in my reach, hut
could find nothing that would give me
permanent relief. When 1 overworked,
it. would pain me very much. In April,
1878, I began to think l should be a crip
ple for life ; hut, having some of “Ken
dall’s Spavin Cure,” thought I would try*
it. I used one-third of a bottle, and ex
perienced relief at once. The pain left
me and has not troubled me since. I feci
gratelu) to yeu, and would recommend
"Kendall’s Spavin Cure” to all who suf
ter from sprains or rheumatism.
Yours truly, Mils, .1. RUUTWELL.
