our want of more lintels and larger ones
for summer resorters.
Mr. P. M. Larmon of Alto dislrict was

felling a large tree, he cut off a rai! cut
which was hollow, and his dog ran iuto

Yesterday afternoon at 4 o’clock sharp
Ellijiiy and Jasper were united, by ga'-
vanic ties. The telegraph lino was link
ed at 3:50 and the first message was
wired by W. S. Coleman to— a friend in
Jasper. This marks anew era of ad
vancement in our sections. The van
guard ot advanced civilization has flashed
upon us, and today we are linked to the
progressive world. As the galvannic cur
rent mechanically joins Ellijay and Jasper
together, may the electric ties of friendship
and good feeling draw our people closer
together, and may our contnion destiny be
a more prosperous aud happier people.
Death Again-
The body of Mrs. Claude F. Cochran
passed up the railroad from Atlanta yes
terday to tier father’s on Turuiptown
where she will be interred in the family
cemetery at 3 o’clock this evening. She
died Monday at 11:30 of typhoid fever
after an illness of 11 days. Airs. Cochran
was the daughter of Mr. Gus Smith, one,
of the, heat citizens of this county', was
married to Mr. Cochran May 19, 1878 and
lived in this place uutil July 2nd, 1879,
when they moved to Atlanta She was
a member of the Methodist church She
leaves two little children and an affection
ate husband who alone can truly feel the
loss of her presence, while a host of
frieuds deeply sympathize with them in
their sore affliction. Mr. Cochran was
once an editor of the Cocbirr, and is well
known to all our readers. We extend our
sincere feelings to the bereaved husband,
and hope that in this dispensation of
Providence he may find the unseen hand
of Diuity.
A Singular Death.
Or.c of the most peculiar and singular
deaths that we were ever called upon to
chronicle occurred at tbe Briar Patch
about 7 miles below Lere in tbe tower pait
of our county, on Saturday last. Some
time during last week Mrs. Mav, wife ot
Owen May, while busy at some house
work, was stung on the end of the nose
by a hornet. Mrs. May thought nothing
of tbe matter until her nose began swell
ing, giving her severe pains in the head.
Still it was thought that uot.ing serious
would ensue from the swelling and only
the common remedies were used to allay
it and kill the poison. The lady gradually
grew worse and the swelling continued,
going into the head and neck. A phy
sician was siininioiit-d, Cut all effort- to
subdue it proved of no avail, and it sio .ly
extended to the bony until it reached the
heart when the lady died in excruciating
pain. The head and upper portions of
the body were enlarged into an enormous
| size. It w- ne.ii ,y a week after she had

Trip to the Association.
Sunday morning Im dan nnl bright atxl
clear, and some of our chivalry were sect,
quite early stirring around making prepar
ations to start to the Association which
wa then in session nt ( lurry Dig church.
<>ur |Nirty left town at 7 o’clock, consist
ing of Messrs. W. C. Allen, 11. 11. Holt,
Bill Teem, T. B. Kirby ami Dr. John K.
Deck, Missis Victoria (. uastaiu, E-telle
Watkins, Laura McKinney, lutt Teem and
Bonnie England. The air was cool nod
pleasant, and had a (due tinge, just
enough to soften tiie landscape, and with
spirited horses and gay turnout our happy
party sped over hills and through valleys
at a rapid pace. The forest was gorgeous
it. the < rightist hues of melting green.
Tile golden sun tempeie i lrs rays in mild
ness with beneficent warmth. The b rds
sang fearlessly in the tree lops; the vva
ters flowed merrily to the laughing sea’
the breezes played in wanton gtfce, tossing
tlie lea I lets upon the trees and roblt ng the
llowers of their clioibt (jet iUme that greel
tlio senses of tlie passer-by; all thing
breathed of harmony, and uo jarring dis
cords were heard upon the ambient ah.
We arrived at the uhurch at 10 o’clock.
Kev. J . P. Chastain preached the opening
sermon, at 11 o’clock, followed by Bev.
Mr. I’aruij to the largest concourse of
people it has heeu our experience to see at
an Association. Intermission was then
had for dinner. After diuner was served,
which was good enougii for princes, aud
which demonstrated that our Milijuy girls
are ever thoughtful to prepare eatables on
occasions like this, Rev. Julius Pickett
delivered the introductory sermon follow
ed by others. The Association passed off
quietly, giviug genera! satisfaction to all,
so far as we have been able to learn. We
understand six churches withdrew from
Hie body and received letters of dismis
sion, and will unite with a number tu
churches from Murray county and organ
ize anew association on Mountaintowu
on Friday before tlie 4tli Sunday in Sep
tember. Mr. Seaborn Hill represented
the Ellijay Baptist church. Tlie party
stopped a short time at Wbitepalb on its
return, and r died into Ellijay as old so!
was shedding his last rays over our quiet
little town.
OUR NEIGHBORS TALK.
Eastern Gilmer. —Granny Jay is so
closely eugaged with her tobacco crop
that she cannot write for a spell, so I
decide to write a few letters.
Piotraoted meetings are the go those
days; some are getting good while ■ others
are getting better.
We had the pleasure of attending the
Ladies’ Christ an Temperence Union at
fc'erougetovvn last Sunday. A large con
gregation was there, and among the many
we believe the Lord was there with those
ladies in their good work.
Mr. R. N. Johnston killed a rattle
snake on the Stover Mountain last Fiiday
that was 4J feet in length.
Rev. B. S. Holden started last Thurs
day to the Ellijay Baptist Association. We
guess he will preach some more prohibi
tion doctrine up there. You are rgnt,
Ben, go ahead.
What about ministers of the gospel who
advocate morality and re.igion mid then
vote for whiskey, for crime and for
degradation ?
Air. J. 11. M. Weaver is teaching
school at Bucklown, and we learn that he
is teaching “manner making” as a science.
If that is the case we want him to teach
next year in our section for wo know of a
great many people in this section young
and old thul ought to attend such a school
as Mr. Weaver’s.
Rev. B. S. Holden, a Baptist minister
of the Gospel aud a member of the church
at Mt. Zion in full fellow-ship, scut an
appointment to Ebaneezav church for
preaching on the second Sunday ot this
month. Aide.' the congregation had about
collected two of the deacons objected to
Rev. Holden preaching in the church un
less he would preach a certain doctrine
ami say nothing concerning prohibition.
Holden said, 1 cannot preach to please
man. My object in preaching is a home
in heaven for myself and the world. The
deacons said, You caunot preach in the
house. The congregation then moved off
of the church property aud had preaching
m the grove. The Sermon was eloquent
aud composed of truth from beginning to
end. After preaching was over one of the
deacons went to the church to close the
doors and windows and found three drunk
men lying among the benches. How
dews this look as an example to the sin
ner world for churches to close theirdoois
ou visiiing ministers and open them for
drunkards to make a vomiting room of ?
Also this church and Clear Greek church
closed their doors on Rev. Joe Jones be
cause he was advocating sobriety and
morality. Tickauetley church also
growled and raising its bristles said,
“Jones canuot preach in our church.” We
do not know what these churches mean
unless they oant to keep out enlightened
men so they can live a iifetime in the
dark aud at last try to go to heaven on
the idiot list. Mary Stout.
