of tbe county hotel, when to his utt. r as

criminal's sanctum unhinged, and a clean

crowd soon collected about the jail, and
investigation soon disclosed the manner in
which they' bad liberated themselves. Tbe
two cross-liars of iron that fastened the
cage door were hinged by steeples, and iven
through and clinched on the inside. These
brads were chiseled off and the steeples
driven out, unhinging tbe iron door. Tbe
two wooden doors tiiat shut off the en

county.
Bln riff H. M. Bramlett set about to over
■ take the boys if possible, and, leaving here
on Sunday morning about 10 o’clock, he
arrived at Mr. Vcß Worley’s iu this county
by 12 o’clock when Craig was eating din
ner at Iticbe’s home, one mile only from
Mr. Worley’s. Pursuit was instituted,
and at about 11 o’clock Sunday night,
with lights, Craig was tracked to tbe
house of one Muliinax, 4 nules this side
of Spring Place iu Murray county where
Craig’s wife is staying acd where he
temporality had lodged. The posse of
tour men surrounded the house, two ou
the back side to prevent a retreating es
cape, and the other two wrapt at the
door facing the d'Mjr. Some oue shut - the
d-ior quickly, ai,d a woman raised a wiu
dow at tire hack of au adjoining room
when out leaped Craig iuto the Sheriff’s
embrace, bare footed with oue shoe iu his
hand. He was brought back to town
aud lodged in jail after it was securely re
paired, on in formation received from
Craig aud Mrs. Purcell, mother of Ter
rell Purcell. Sheriff Bramlett swore out
a warrant against the three escaped crim
inals, Mrs. Purcell aud Mr. John Hipp of
this place, charging them Jointly with
breaking jail, which is a felony. Mr.
Ilipp was up before Judge Greer of tie
county court Tuesday aud waived exam
iuatiou until the May term of Gilmer Su
perior court, under a bond of SI,OOO.
Mr. Ilipp is one et the best, most quiet
aud peaceable citizens of Gilmer, is a
member of tbe town council, and his al
leged connection with tbe matter is re
gretted by bis many friends. He lives
near tbe jail and iu his safe has been de
posited duplicate keys of the jail to be
used in case of tire or loss of the other
keys, or any emergency that might de
mand hasty action with the jail. He
, was up in the jail at about 10 o’clock
Saturday night with John Purcell, bother
of Terrell Purcell, who deßired to talk
witii his brother, aud Mr. Hipp desiring to
befriend tbe man let him go up iuto the
jail a short w bile, not suspecting, as be
stales, anything of the kind would occur
thereafter. At that time he states nolh-
iug was done towards liberating the
prisoners and the doors wore securely
locked. Mrs. Purcell states that the
tools, which were a chisel aud a harnmar,
were carried to the jail by her Friday
eveuing before, as the door leading into
thejaii was generally open during the
day. Mr. Hipp disowns having known
or done anything with turniug out the
prisoners, which Craig and Mrs. Purcell
staled was about 4 o’clock Sunday morn
ing, and Craig states work was done Fri
day nignt. Sheriff Biamlctt thinks he
has a strong case against Mr. liipp< while
Mr. Hipp denies having auything
to do with the affair, aud his attorney,
Col. E. W. Colemau, says he will un
doubtedly prove -clear of any complicity
in the deed whatever. Mr. Hipp is a
prominent merchant of Ellijay and hift
many friends, ami all regret anything oc
curring that would tend to implicate him
in so serious a predicament. Nothing
about the jail but the steeples that
held the cage door was disfigured or in
jured.
