Mr. Samuel Jones of Clear ('reek accl
dentally shot himself very seriously last
Sa*urelay. He had been out hunting with
a short single barrel shot gun and stopped
at a neighbor’s house. S iine of the chil
dren were trying to get the gun from him
in a playful manner when he struck the
In inmer against the p.ucli and discharged
tiie gun. The muzzle fell over against h’S
hat brim which prevented the flash from
putting out ids eye. tiie load of shot si l ik
ing his left temple and ranging over tiie
top of his head. All tiie hair aud flesh
to the skuil was torn off, ti e width of
three lingers, from his left ear to the top
of his hea l and presented a sickening
sight, lie is however doing as well as
could be expected.
The exercises of the music class at night
are becoming more attractive and inter
esting at each successive meeting. Rev
Mr. Griner is a master of the science of
music and the class shows already tiie ef
fccts of his training. When toe class suf
ficiently understands the blackboard ex
ercises it will meet at tiie residences in
town forpiacticc. Every young lady and
gentleman iu Elhjay shou and join the class
and learn to smg. The serious ami no
ticahle lack of vocal music at church iu
town is a reproach to the town, and this
effort to improve tiie church music stiou.d
receive the hearty cooperation of all. Lot
all who desire better singing at our
churches encourage and aid this gra uitous
labor of Mr. Griuer who is endeavoring to
remedy this glaring want of our church
wot ship.
The prospect of the Augusta and Chat
taneega railroad has enlivened our people
a little. VVe were glad to see some of our
citizens self-sacrificing, courteous and en
terprising enough to propose their services
and stock to show the route from Eliijay
to Amicolola Gap to Col. Redwine. It
shows that though we have ‘-eeii back
ward in giving hiformtion and ujcelerat
ing the proposed railroad our people have
not entirely given up enterprise, but that
they will freely give aid when opportunity
shows that good can be done. Mi. D<tye
Jarett kindly proposed his stock to tnose
who wou and go,and Messrs. Levi Greer and
J. P. Perry volunteered their services as
repieseutatives of the county to pilot Col.
ltedwinc along the route to Amici loia
Cap. Such publ.c spirit is commendable,
ami we hope the whole towu will catch
the fever. The time has come when
something must he done. If we as a
people or county manifest no disposition to
aid the road authorities or desire for the
road, they ill turn will manifest no dis|x
sition to accommodate us or manage the
road to suit our convenience. We must
abow some unselfish desire for tbe road
and make a reasonable effort to secure its
passage this stay. We shall expect to
see tbe town and county move up uo this
very vital question, sod couvlucu tbe road
authorities that we are lu earnest about
wauling lb* mad.

The Baptist church of this place organ
ized a flourishing Sunday school las* Sun
day. Kev. E. B. Shopo was elected su
perintendent, J. P. Conb, Jr., Secretary,
aud T. B K rby treasurer. The school
will meet in the afternoon at 8 o’clock.
Let every body attend.
The Baptist church of this place re-e
--lected Rev. E. B Shope to fill the re
maiuder ot the pastoral year. Mr. Shope
has giveu satisfaction to his church mem
bership as pastor, and his re-election to
till the unexpired poition of the ministe
rial year shows the confidence and esteem
in which he is held by r his church.
Each of the three churches of Ellijay
should have an organ. Nothing adds
more to the charm of church worship
than a sweet toned organ. It would
greatly aid the church music aud render
worship more pleasant. They are the
life of a live Sunday school, in fact they
aie almost imlespeiisible. We understand
• lie Baptist emu oh is ananging to procure
one, and we hope the oilier churches will
promptly follow their example. Let us
hear something more concerning this
move.
