*‘Little Jim."
The cottage was a thatched one, the outside
old and mean,
Yet Everything within that cot was wond’rous
neat end clean;
The night was dark and stormy, the wind was
Bowling wild,
A patient mother watched by the death-bed of
her child —
A little worn-out creature —his once bright
eves grown dim;
It was the collier’s wife and child—they called
him “ Littie Jim.”
And oh ! to sec the briny tears fast hurrying
down her cheek,
As she offered un a prayer in thought—she
was afraiu to spaa it,
Lest she might 'waken one she loved far bet
ter tlian her life,
For she had ail a mother’s heart, had that
poor coiner’s wife—
With hands uplifted, see! she kneels beside
the sufferer’s bed,
And pravs that lie will spare her boy, and
take herself instead.
She gets her answer from the child—soft fall
these words from h.m :
“ Mother, the angels do so smile, and beckon
Little .Jim;
I have no pain, dear mother, now, hut oh, I
am so dry!
Just moisten poor Jim’s lips, and mother,
don’t ye cry.”
With gentle, trembling haste she held a tea
cup to his lips;
He smiled to thank her as he took three little
snips—
“ Tell father, when he comes from work, I said
good-night to him;
And now mother I’ll go to sleep.” Alas ! poor
little Jim.
She saw that he was dying—that the child
she loved so dear
Had uttered the last words that she ufightever
hear;
The cottage door is epened—the collier’s step
is heard :
The father and the mother meet, but neither
speak a word—
He felt that all was ever—he knew his child
was dead;
He took the candle in hi? hand and walked
toward the bed.;'
His quivering lips gave token of the grief he’d
fain conceal—
And see! his wife has joined him—the strick
en couple kneel;
With hearts bowed down with sadness, thev
humbly ask of Him
In heaven once more tp meet again their own
poor Little Jim.

Where Boy's Marbles -.Came .From.
Not far from Saltzburg, Austria, is a
great mountain, which consists of noth
ing but beautiful marble. The stone
masons ont out blocks and columns of
it, take them to the great,citv, and build
palaces and fine houses or them. But
what becomes of the little pieces that are
so small that the great people can hot
use them? These are for tqe children.
Out of them are made the little marble
balls—playing marbles. How this is done
let me tell von: From this same moun
tain several brooks flow down into the
valley below. Their waters rush down
from one shell of rock to another, and
form countless waterfalls. By the side
of these falls numerous small mills have
been placed. In each of these the water
drives a little fly wheel. Underneath
the fly wheel is found a grinding stone.
This mill-stone turns in a stone trough,
into which fresh water is constantly
splashing. The larger bits of marble
are broken with a hammer into the an
gular pieces about a large as walnuts.
No child would care to play with these
atones; they are sharp cor tiered, jagged
and gray and dusty besides. They" arc
thrown into the stone mill trough' with
water, and mill-stone begins to turn.
Now the angular stones have a long,
merry dance; they hop and skip and
tumble over ''ne another, and whirl round
and round in a circle; they crash and
beat and grate upon each other all day
and night long. At last they become
so small that the mill-stone in the trough
takes no more hold on thmp. and the lit
tle mill stands .still. Then the little
stones are ready. The mill-stone is
lifted—there they lie,.g hundred or more
jtlMogether, and one just as pretty as
the other. They are perfectly round ;
fdl corners And roughness are gone.
The marble now only needs polishing. •
General Early and the Scala

Gen. Early and his companions, offering
cigars, widely they accepted, supposing
him to H? an old comrade in arms.
“ General,’’ said Bash, “ you don’t seem
to know me.” “No,” replied the Gen

General, with scorn and contempt in
tone, look and gesture, “ your impudence
in addressing gentlemen deserves much
worse, and, had I knows you, I would
not have received yoor cigar”, and he
tossed it from him with loathing and turn

WELL
AUGER!
WILLIAM BROOKS,
General Agent for Georgia,
Crawford, Oglethorpo County, Ga.
The Anger is operated by Wither hand o£
horse power, three men being required when
the former is used. We can bore to any
depth, and as large a thirty-six inches in di
ameter. As soon as the well is bored we tube
it from top to bottom with good inch lumber,
ripped in strips three inches wine, and of the
prooer beveled edges to suit the inside of the
well. The tubing nearest the surface will
last fifteen or twenty years, and then you can
pull it out and put in anew joint. That be
low the water will last for ages. The wood
causes the water to taste of it only a Week or
so. Either pumps or buckets can be used in
our wells. The bucket fills from a valve in
the bottom. At the bottom of each well is
kept a galvanized iron bucket, left there for
the purpose of cleaning out the well, which
can be drawn out at any time, and your well
thoroughly cleansed of the most minute parti
cle of trash or garbage that should chance to
fall into it. The old-fashioned dug wells cost
from y-F> to $lO per year to be kept clean—our
bored wells costs nothing. We bore through
quicksand easily, and guarantee it to never
alter annoy you.
ONE DOLLAR PER FOOT
is my price for boring, and tubing with wood,
and we can generally
Finish a Well in One Day.
We also supply buckets and well-house at a
small additional charge. Can bore in either
winter or summer
