OGLETHORPE ECHO
PUBILSIIED WEEKLY BY
T. L. GANTT, Editor and Prop’r.
Olonda with Silver Linings.
BY MARY COLBY.
There’s never a tlav so sunny,
But a little cloud appears ;
There’s never a life so happy
But has its time .of tears ;
Yet the sun shines out the brightest
When the stormy tempests clears.
There’s never a garden growing
With roses in every plot;
There’s never a heart so hardened,
But it has one tender spot;
We have only to pursue the boarder
To find the forget-me-not.
There’s never a cup so pleasant
But has bitter with the sweet;
There’s never a path so rugged
That bears not the print of feet;
And we have a Helper promised,
For the trials we may meet.
There’s never a sun that rises,
But we know it will set at night;
The tints that gleam in the morning
At evening are just as bright;
And the hour that is the sweetest
Is between the dark and light.
There’s never a dream that’s happy
But the waking makes us sad:
There’s never a dream of sorrow
But the waking makes us glad ;
We shall look some day with wonder
At the troubles we have had.
There’s never a way 30 narrow
But the entrance*is made straight ;
There’s always a guide to point us
To the “little wicket gate;”
And the angels will he nearest
To a soul that is desolate.
There’s never a heart so haughty
But will some day bow and kneel;
There’s never a heart so wounded
That the Saviour cannot heal ;
There’s many a lovely forehead
That is bearing the hidden seal.
The Letter H.
’ Twas whispered in heaven, ’twas muttered
in hell,
Aad echo caught faintly the sound as it fell;
On the confines of earth ’twas permitted to
rest,
And the depth of the ocean its presence con
test.
Twill be found in the sphere when ’tis riven
asunder,
Be seen in the lightning, and heard in the
thunder ;
Twas alloted to man with his earliest breath,
Attends at his birth, and awaits him at death.
Presides o’er his happiness, honors and health,
Is the prop of his house and the end of his
wealth.
In the heaps of the miser ’tis hoarded with
care,
But is sure to be lost by his prodigal heir.
It begins every hope, every wish it must
bound;
AY ith the husbandman toils, with the mon
arch is crowned.
YV ithout it the soldier, the sailor may roam,
But woe to the wretch who expels it from
home!
In the whispers of conscience its voice will
be found,
Nor een in the whirlwind of passion be
drowned.
Twill not soften the heart, though deaf be
the ear,
"Twill make it acutely and instantly hear;
But m shade let it rest, like a delicate flower;
Oh, breathe on it softly—it dies in an hour.
Toccoa and Tallulah.
Toccoa and Tallula Falls—
On they send their waters,
Both the children of one God,
Both our Father’s daughters.
Tallulah has her falls in clan,
She ripples and she rushes;
Toccoa plays a single hand,
And only once she gushes.
Tallulah has her rocks and cliffs,
With grandeur well displayed ;
Toccoa has her lesser rifts,
But she is not dismayed.
Tallulah runs like she is mad,
And rushes on her way ;
Toccoa laughs, for she is clad
In beauty, with her spray.
Tallulah has her scenes aloft,
The eye of man to please
Toccoa’s beautiful fall is oft
Beloved, for its genV.e breeze.
Tallulah is loved for her scenery" grand,
Toccoa for her fall,
But they who cannot love them both
Cannot love at all.
Those Matches.
Mr. Coleman of our place is an invet
erate smoker, and always carries a box
of matches about his person for the pur
pose of lighting his cigar.
Before starting to church last Sabbath,
he placed a box of them in his rear pock
et of his pantaloons, in order to enjoy a
smoke on his way home after the services.
During the services, Coleman became
somewhat restless and shiftless rather too
much weight over the side where the
matches were, and exploded them.
* * * * * * *
When he came to himself, he was
hanging across the pew in front of his
own, on his stomach, and vigoruslv rub
bing the place where the pocket had been
and shouting “Fire !” at the top of his
voice.
His elevated position gave the congre
gation a fine opportunity to discover the
cause of the trouble.
But the opportunity didn’t last very
long, for when Coleman found that there
was about a square foot of his pantaloons
gone, he concluded to get down and go
home, and he did so at once, without
waiting to look for his hat and gloves.
He spent the remainder of the evening
in prayer and meditation, but his
tations were dreadfully mixed up with
matches and burnt pantaloons. He hopes
to be able to resume his place in the
choir sometime during the coming
spring, if the salve he is using proves as
efficacious as he thinks it is.
“ Arrah, me darlint,” cried Jamie
O’Flannigan to his loquacious sweet
heart, who Jiad not given the opportuni
ty, to “ get in a word even edgewise,”
during a two hours’ ride behiud the lit
le bay nags in his oyster wagon, “are ye
afither knowin’ why your cheeks are like
my ponies there ?” Shu re, and its be
cause they’ red, is it?” quoth the blush
ing Bridget. “ Faith, and a better raison
than that, mavourneen ; because there is
>ne o them aich a ido of a waggin tongue.”

The Auger is operated by either hand or
horse power, three men being required when
the former is used. We can bore to any
depth, and as large a thirty-six inches in di
ameter. As soon as the well is bored we tub*
it from top to bottom with good inch lumber,
ripped in strips three inches wine, and of the
proper beveled edges to suit the inside of the
well. The tubing nearest the surface will
last fifteen or twenty years, and then you can
pull it out and put in anew joint. That be
low the water will last for ages. The wood
causes the water to taste of it only a week or
so. Either pumps or buckets can be used in
our wells. The bucket fills from a valve in
the bottom. At the bottom of each well is
kept a galvanized iron bucket, left there for
the purpose of cleaning out the well, which
can be drawn out at any time, and your well
thoroughly cleansed of the most minute parti
cle of trash or garbage that should chance to
fall into it. The old-fashioned dug wells cost
from $5 to $lO per year to be kept clean—our
bored wells costs nothing. We bore through
quicksand easily, and guarantee it to never
after annoy you.
ONE DOLLAR PER FOOT
is my price for boring, and tubing with wood,
and we can generally
Finish a Well in OneDay.
We also supply buckets and well-house at a
small additional charge. Can bore in either
winter or summer
