OGLETHORPE ECHO
Fi-'BMSHI’-t? Wi: KKT.Y BY
TITOS. Z. GANTT, Editor and Pr&pr’or
Crawford, Ga., - - Jane 18 r 1875.
Written for the Echo.]
LINES
Skggotted by teeing little Mert&ec Jarrell enter
a church, holding her grandmother’s hand.
!><*ar guileless, happy little ehild, as yet you
do not know
Uow many unavailing tears from vour sweet
eyes must flow.
The hand you clasp has ever been so fond and
kind to you,
Slse to her charge has always been so faithful/
firm and true,.
That voir have never tasted yet that bitter,
bitter cup,.
The dregs ot which the-motherless are always
doomed to r*p;
V ou feel not yet the aching pain—the lonely,
bleeding heart,.
That in the coming years will make your tears
anbiddenstart.
The silver crown which time has placed cm
that dear aged brow,
Shows day bv day, tho* silently, her home is
nearer now—
The love-light in those tender eyes may soon
be bid from view.
The hands Ik: folded on a breast which has
been “ leal and Irtie.’-''
But little one—dear precious child—there is
in Heaven a God,
To guard you when her loving heart is stilled
bfeneath the sod;
Ah angel from his court* above even now your
brow r has fau’d
With wings of love—Unseen by. all your
mother holds your hand..
l' do not think eternity—the thought, perhaps,
is wild—
@an make a mother quite forget her little
tender child? -
Since “ God is love” to be with him would
make her love no less,.
And oh! I think he still permits that love to
guard and bless. -
Frank.
CREDIT ANH NO CREDIT..
Those who buy on credit
Seldom know the price,-..
But those who pay; the money down'
Will ask tlic question twice.
Sb never buy on credit-,
And then you can be bold
To ask the price of aIH the goods
That in the world are sold.
So never buy on credit,
And save that large per cent.
That generally the merchant has
To collect the credit debt.
So never buy on credit,
For it will make you poor—
Von need not ask for witnesses,
This all the people know.
For many men have tried it,
t( And to-day 1 hear them say,
“T owe a heap of monev,
And havn’t a dollar to pay.”
There is a want of confidence,
I would it were restored,
And this 1 think could sooo.be done
By forking the money o’er.
By doing this the merchant then
With-pleasing looks and spry,
Will meet you with a kind word
And ask, what will yon buy ?
The Editor, too, is calling—
( Don’t you hear the Echo say,
“ Come pay up vour subscription,
Or your paper stops to-day.”
Granger.
Risen from the Dead.—An event
occurred recently at the house of
August Sink, the well-known hotel
proprietor at the Grand Trunk Junc
tion, which created an intense ex
citement. A little child of Edward
I)\yyer, an engineer in the employ of the
Michigan Central Railroad Company,
died, apparently,. and the funeral ar
rangements were made. The body was
laid out in the usual manner. A shroud
was made for it, .and all other prepara
tions for the funeral, even to the enga
ging of carriages, were completed. Just
before the time lor the funeral services
to commence, the attendants were sud
denly startled by a sharp cry, and to
their momentary horror and consterna
tion, the babe for whose death they had
sorrowed* two days was seen to move.
Instantly all was excitement in the
house.. Grief was changed to rejoicing
lor one. risen/as it were, from the dead*
and the news of the strange event went
abroad.as on the> wings of lightning.
r llhe neighbors flocked to see the child
thus providentially returned from the
grave, and all that day the wondrous
tidings were carried from house to house.
The jey ol the father and mother cannot
fie told. The fullness of their hearts will
be measurably understood by the fathers
and mothers who have put away their
little ones in. the earth forever.
A- Remarkable Dog Story.— This
story is told us by a gentlemrn who
says its tiufch is vouched for by witnesses
•f undoulte 1 veracity, says the Frank
, . ( K 7‘) Patriot: " Some years ago,
■while Mr. Hamilton was fishing near the
rapids of the Mississippi, just above the
Keokuk, he observed below him a man
bailing a canoe, preparatory to taking
himself, wife and baby across the river.
At the same time Mr. H. saw that his
Newfoundland dog was watching the pro
ceedings of the party. Seeming to com
prehend their intention, the dog uttered
a peculiar howl, and passing rapidly up
the nver for some distance, plunged into
the water and swam diagonally down and
landed on a large rock standing out of the
water. He again watched the party who
in the meantime had. embarked in the
canoe. Just as the little boat passed the
rock, it was caught in* the rapidly de
fending current and instantly capsized,
lhe woman in falling in* the water,
loosed her hold on the which float
ed down the Stream. The man caught
his wife and waded with her ta tks rock.
Jlie instant the child fell into the water,
the dog leaped in, and in a short time
was seen in the still water below swim
ming with the child in his month, which
he carried in safety to the shore.

WELL AUGER!

WILLIAM BROOKS.
General Agent for Georgia,
Crawford, Oglethorpe County, Ga.
The Anger is operated by either hand or
horse power, three men being required when
the former is used. We can bore to anv
depth, and as large a thirty-six inches in di
ameter. As soon as the well is bored we tube
it from top to bottom with good inch lumber,
ripped in strips three inches wine, and of the
proper beveled edges to suit the inside of the
well. The tubing nearest the surface will
last fifteen or twenty years, and then vou can
pull it out and put in anew joint, that be
low the water will last for ages. The wood
causes the water to taste of it only a week or
so. Either pumps or buckets can be used in
our wells. The bucket fills from a valve in
the bottom. At the bottom of each well is
kept a galvanised iron bucket, left there for
the purpose of cleaning out the well, which
can De drawn out at any time, and your well
thoroughly cleansed of the most minute parti
cle of trash or garbage that should chanee to
fall into it. The old-fashioned dug wells cost
from $5 to $lO per year to be kept clean—onr
bored wells costs nothing. We bore through
quicksand easily, and guarantee it to never
after annoy you.
ONE DOLLAR PER FOOT
is my price for boring, and tubing with wood,
and we can generally
Finish a Well in One Day.
We also supply buckets and well-house at a
small additional charge. Can bore in either
winter or summer
