Putting the Baby to Sleep.
[From the Danbury News.]
Mrs. Porley was putting her baby to
sleep, Friday afternoon. She sat in a
rocking chair, with the child snugged up
to her, and as she vibrated to and fro she
sang an appropriate song. The child
was restless, and seemed to show a dispo
sition to be awake and see what was taking
place about it. And thus Mrs. Porley
sung on :
“ Ah ah ah ah oh oh oh ah ah ah ah
oh oh oh oh ah ah ah ah oh oh—Come
now go to sleep. Ah ah ah ah oh oh oh
oh ah ah ah ah—Are you going to mind
me, young woman ? An ah ah ah oh oh
oh oh
Just then there was a sudden and sharp
yell beneath the window.
“ Thomas Jefferson,” cried Mrs. Porley
with penetrating stefiiess.
“ What,” came from under. the win
dow.
“ Go right away from there at once.
Don’t you know that I’m trying to get
this baby asleep ?”
“ But I can’t make this stick stand up,”
whined the voice.
“ I’ll make it stand up if I come out
there, you can depend upon that. Ah
ah ah ah oh oh oh oh all ah ah ah oh oh
oh oh—Go to sleep now, or I’ll spank
you. Ah ah ah ah oh oh oh oh ”
Just then came a knock at the front
door.
“ Bless my soul, who’s that? Thomas
Jefferson!”
“ What ?
“ Go and see who’s on the front stoop.
Shich-ch-ch-shicli ah all—”
“ It’s a woman, ma,” responded Thom
as Jefferson from outside.
Mrs. Porley put the baby in the crib,
and went to the door. A lady with a
book was there. She wanted to know if
Mrs. Porley wanted to buy the book.
Mrs. Porley stopped long enough to make
sure that the stranger wore a bombazine
dress without an overskirt,a sacque with
little or no trimming, and a Victoria hat
with a purple feather, and then she said
she didn’t have any money for books and
shut the door.
The baby was again taken up, and
Mrs. Porley said, “ Now go to sleep, or
I’ll leave you in the crib. Ah ah ah ah
oh oh oh oh all all ah oh oh oh
* 1 Ho, lio,” explosively came from the
yard, and the eyes of the baby snapped
wide open.
“ Thomas Jefferson, if I have to speak
to you again you will know it.”
“ I was laughing at Ned Stokes, Ma,”
explained Thomas Jefferson.
“Clear away from that window at
once. Do you hear me ?”
Quiet immediately followed, and the
song went on like this.
“ It does seem as if everything is plot
ting against me this afternoon. Now.go
to sleep or I’ll know the reason of it. Ah
all ah ah oh oh oh oh ah ah ah ah oh oh
oh oh.” Three minutes thu3 passed.
Mrs. Porley had just finished an all oh
when Thomas Jefferson came thunder
ing into the house, causing the baby to
start bolt upright.
“ Get out of here,” shouted the unhap
py mother, or I’ll take every liair out of
your head.
“ I tell you Air. Green wants to take
our spade,” protested Thomas Jefferson,
staring indignantly at his mother.
“ Why don’t you get it for him then,
and not come hammering in here when
you see I’m getting your sister to sleep,
you young miscreant.”
“ I don’t know where it is,” was the
sullen reply.
“ Go and find it then.”
“ Where I’ll go.”
“ Any where out of my sight,” retor
ted the vexed woman. “ Go, I tell you,
or I’ll start your boots in a way you’ll
know.”
Thomas Jefferson started his own boots
at once, and the baby was hastily shook
up, and the song again renewed. In
about a minute Thomas Jefferson came
back, with*an agreeable countenance,and
the information that the spade couldn’t
be found. Mrs. Porley, half distracted,
dumped the baby into the crib, made a
desperate lunge at Thomas Jefferson’s
head, but unhappily missed him, and
discovered the spade for Mr. Green.
Then with n sigh that undoubtedly came
from the heart she returned to her task,
and took up the burden of her song.
Five minutes passed. The baby was
conquered, and to the anxious gaze of the
mother revealed a composed and sleep
ing countenance. She rose softly to place
it in the crib, saying in a sudden voice,
“ Ah ah ah ah oh oh oh oh,” when the
door burst open, and Thomas Jefierson
again appeared, and the baby stared sig
nificantly.
“ Ma, said Thomas Jefferson, totally
indifferent to the massive frown she was
working for him, “Ned Stokes wants a
piece of cake.”
Ah ah ah ah—clear out—oh oh oh oh
—from—oh ah —here—ah ah oh—you
young wretch oh oh oh—
“ But can’t have a piece
of cake ?” persisted the demon which was
inside of T homas Jeffersoi>.
“ Get out—ah ah ah ah—and send
Ned Stokes—oh oh oh oh ah ah ah ah—
home or I’ll blister—schich schich schich
—both of you ”
“ But ma

WELL AUGER!
o
WILLIAM BROOKS,
General Agent for Georgia,
Crawford, Oglethorpe County, Ga.
o-
The Auger is operated by either hand or
horse power, three men being required when
the former is used. We can bore to any
depth, and as large a thirty-six inches in di*
ameter. As soon as the well is bored we tube
it from top to bottom with good inch lumber,
ripped in strips three inches wine, and of the
proper beveled edges to suit the inside of the
well. The tubing nearest the surface will
last fifteen or twenty years, and then you can
pull it out and put in anew joint, That be
low the water will last for ages. The wood
causes the water to taste of it only a week of
so. Either pumps or buckets can be used in
our wells. The bucket fills from a valve in
the bottom. At the bottom of each well is
kept a galvanized iron bucket, left there for
the purpose of cleaning out the well, which
can be drawn out at any time, and yonr well
thoroughly cleansed of the most miiiute parti
cle of trash or garbage that should chance to
fall into it. The old-fashioned dug wells cost
from $5 to $lO per year to be kept clean—our
bored wells costs nothing. We bore through
quicksand easily, and guarantee it to never
after annoy yon.
ONE DOLLAR PER FOOT
is my price for boring, and tubing with wood,
and we can generally

We also supply buckets and well-house at a
