The New York World pfablbfces the
'following about Major Totn OchiL
free :
“ I hiring the tvarr he iid de tamp
on the staff of General Dick Taylor, and
<•■ :*s sent to carry dispatches to Rich
mond, reporting a serrre ■engagement in
Arkansas, tie was Compelled to cross
down into Texas in ord-er to make his
way through the federal lines. One
wight be stopped at a fine mansion in
Northern Texas. The only members of
the family at hotec were an old lady and
her young am! lovely daughter. The
o Ily son of th-e lady of the house was a!>-
se it iu the Confederate arm}'. Tom’s
Confederate uniform secured hint a hos
pit il reception. The lady had heard ru
mors of a great battle having been fought
and was anxious to obtain tidings of her
son, and finally after Tom had given a
glowing description of the battle, she
he-itatingly inquired ifhe knew of a
young officer named in the army.
* Know him, madam,’ cried Torn ; ‘ why,
he was my bosom friend; we were inti
re ite as brothers; in the heat of the bat'
tie ho fell by my side ; l was with him
during his last moments ; lie breathed
his last breath in my arms.’ The old la
de stared at him wildly for a moment;
then cried : ‘My son Imy son V and fell
fainting into the arms of her daughter.
Tlie two ladies _left the room, and for
hours Tom could bear their bitter- sobs
in an ndjniniing room. When copious
fiiMxls of tears had somewhat assuaged
their grief, the young lady re-entered the
room, her eyes red with weeping, and
with tear-stained cheeks she approached
Tom, and said between her sobs l ‘ Both
my mother and myself desire to know
your mime, that we may always hold it
in kind remembrance for your frindship
and devotion to our daer, departed
George.’ ‘ Miss,’ said Tom, ‘ I only did
wlvat was re quired of me as a friend a
soldier and a gentleman, I aiu Major
f >ch ill tree, of the Confederate army.’
The young lady stepped back, ‘What!’
she cried ‘are you Tom Oehilltree?”
* Major Tom Oehilltree, at your service,
Miss,’ was the reply. The young lady
turned, and, rushing .back to the other
room, cried out; ‘ Stop crying, mother,
George is alive and well. Why, that
fellow is Tom Oehilltree, the man who
,could rather lie on credit than tell the
truth for cash.’ ” The Major tells the
story somewhat differently. He says he
was doing his best, and with gratifying
success to console the sister when a
younger brother came in. To him the
Major was introduced and the sad news
conveyed. “Hi! yi! mother,” shouted
the boy ; “ it’s all right; George ain’t no
more dead than T am. Tom Oehilltree
