F. Tennyson, brother of the poet, has
written a letteron spiritualism, in which
I e shth it is the grand subject of the day,
to w hic h no oilier approaches in impor
tance, The psychical and physical phe
nomena are unquestionable genuine facts,
he thinks. “In London and elsewhere,”
lie.-ays, “spirits arc incarnate for periods
varying front a quarter of an hour to
three hours, and appear in the seance
rooms in the midst of an assembled com

material, which, under microscopic in
spection, lose nothing of their wonderful
superfine spiritual texture, whereas hu
man fabrics under simular conditions be
come cables and eart ropes. Hut of these
garments portions may be cut before the
temporary organism dissolves into its
original cerements, which it does even
while you are looking at it, and the rent
in (he garment is instantly filled up and
no appearance of the rupture visible.”
From the latter it would seem thatspir

" Well, really, Nelly, I give it up.”
“ Why, pa, don't yon know the sons of

“ Come, come, my daughter, that is

The employes of the Chicago, Rock
Island and Pacific Road, on the south
western division, tire having a sensation,
it is claimed that the road is haunted by
“ woman in white,” who appears about
midnight. The shape was seen on Wed
nesday night of last week by Engineer
Moore on train No. 0, between l’erlee
and the Pleasant Plain. It was walking
-up the track toward the engine, and the
•engineer, thinking it of flesh, whistled
•for brakes, and almost brought the train
tto a standstill. Within a few feet of his
■train it disappeared. He saw a face
plainly, and supposed it either that of a
lunatic or a somnambulist. On Thurs
day and Friday nights it was seen at
different places between the two towns
by engineers Shaffer and Crew, who agree
with Moore as to its appearance, etc.
Since its first visit the trainmen have
been on the watch. The matter is a
topie of conversation among railroad
men on the division.
A Town of Dwarfs.
Writer in the London Times describes
the effect of excessive intermarriage on
the inhabitants of Brotes, a little town in
the province of Santander, Spain. Until
eighteen or nineteen years ago the vil
-1 i„c was quite shut off from the rest of
the world. Its inhabitants, from their
ever recurring intermarriages, had bc
c into quite a race of dwarfs. On market
days the priests might be seen, with
long black coats ami high black hats, rid
ing in to purchase the simple provisions
for the week’s consumption, men of little
intelligence and no learning, sprung
from the lowest ranks. About eighteen
years ago the Galitian laborers, from
the mines of Galicia, swarmed into the
town for lodging, etc., and since their
colonization the population has increas
ed in strength, stature, education, intel
lect and morality. Their intellects, a'so,
have improved—intellects which have
been stunted dwarfed and ruined by their
frequent intermarriages.
A Western Heiainiseenee.
Years ago, when Rock Island was r.
email village, ami its people had lots of
fun all to themselves, oua of our very
sober ami dignified citizens put his own
head under one end of a yoke and a little
bull’s under the other, to teach the ani
mal how to be useful and work. When
he found the bull was running away
with him down a dirt road towards a
crowd around the country store on Illi
nois street, he measured sixteen feet at
u jump, kept up with the bull and yelled
at the top of his voice: “ Look out! 1 lere
we come, darn our find souls. Head us
somebody and when halted, and the
yoke being lifted from his neck, he yell
ed : “ Unyoke the bull ; never mind me.

Xi'bnchHilnozxar's Hunting- Diary.
Among the discoveries made by Col.
Rawlinson, in the excavations of Baby
lon, was Nebuchadnezzar's hunting dia
ry, with notes, and here and there a
portrait of his dogs, sketched by himself,
with his name under it. He meal ions in
it his having been ill ; and while he was
delirious he thought he had been out to
graze like the beasts of the field. Is not
thi* a wonderful corroboration of Scrip
ture? Rawlinson also found a pot of
preeerres, in an excellent state, and gave
some to Queen Victoria to taste. How
little Nebuchadnezzar’s cook dreamed
when making them that twenty-five cen
turies after the Queen of Kngland would
eat some of the identical preserves that
figured at his master's table!
