Planting Turnip Seed.
As the season for planting turnip seed
ls fast approaching it may not be amiss
to give some few Mggratidna in regard
thereto. In the early spring when the
ground is usually wet and cold, seed*
should be planted very shallow in order
to get the warmth of the sun a* the nat¬
ural warmth of the earth, so that they
may come up well and yield a good staud.
But in hot summer, the season for plant¬
ing rutabagas, it is necessary to plant
deeper in order to secure a good stand.
Plant yourseed at least one inch deep; if
very dry and hot, one and a half to two in
ehw. Urea roll the ground *<>• aa to thor¬
oughly pack it, and if the seed are good
the stand will be good. The resonable
ness of this is very plain to any one who
will think hut a moment. The ground
as prepared for small seeds is generally
worked up very loose and light, a small,
shallow drill opened and the seeds brush¬
ed in or rarer:’<t very lightly: there is
moisture enough in the ground to sprout
the seed, but a few days of July or Au
gust sunshine dries the ground

been a mystery. The vessel in which

my mother, who was acquainted with

the Vessel in which Mrs. Alston embark¬

the passengers robbed, and the vessel

New York, You ntay have seen such
sights every day. ■-- r
Tho gasslight made her pinched face
look all the more sorrowful, and somehow
it seemed as if her ragged dress looked
more forlorn than in the broad glare of
day.
As she moved here and there searching
as carnflitly as men looked for gold, four
little red toes peeped out from one dilapi¬
dated shoe. They had been bruised, and
hurt and front bitten, aud stubbed against
stone and plank, till the poor child limped
wearily.
Her white face provnkod no sympathy,
her fluttering rags were unuoticed, her
forlorn look called forth no word, but the
eyes of a dozen men who loited about
tho wharf watched the four little red toes
moviBg here and there, and every heart
grew a hit softer. . .
* Five cents will buy more fuel than
she will pick up in a week,” whispered a
brawny river man aa he felt for his wal¬
let.
The four little red toes were at. the
edge of the wharf. The black waters ca«t

In some bare room, up long flights pf

till she fell asleep in her chair; but there
was no clatter of a pair of old shoes
the stairs to arouse her, and when day
dawned she lifted her head in a startled
way, thought for an instant that she saw
four littlored toes by the deor, and then
sprang up to cry out—
