THE WAR EEOOED 01 THE
TOM COBB INFANTRY.
31V GEORGE H. LESTER.
NO. V.
After the Pennsylvania Campaign
and our return to Virginia, we were en
gaged for some time in picket duty on
the ltappahanocb river and in the
neighborhood of Culpepper C. H. The
T. C. I. were now reduced to a skeleton,
comprising probably not more than a
dozen men. We had lost all of our orig
inal company officers. On our retreat
we had lost, hv capture, one of the favor
ite of the company and also of the regi
ment. This was Lieut A. Webb Robin
son, who was captured is an ambulance,
being very sick. He was taken to a Fed
eral prison, where he languished until
the close of the war. A bigger soul
never was encased in a small body than
Webb Robinson's. As Commissary Clerk
under Capt. Quinn he r> udered many an
extra favor to the T. C. I. in the way of
rations in straitened times. .Such was
his popularity with the company that they
prevailed on hirn to give up his position
and accept a Lieutenantcy in the com
pany, where he was soon captured as be
fore stated. He managed to live through
his hard and dreary prison life, and at
the surrender remained in Virginia,
where he is now living, and the writer
will no doubt exprss tnewish of every
1. C. I. that Webb may live long and
prosper.
We were engaged in no more hostili
ties during the balance of this year ex
cept the little fight at Mine Run, where
w< met with no casualties.
The winter now having set in we went
into winter quarters on the Rapidan,
this being the second winter we had
spent in Virginia, and in the same sec
tion of country where we had spent the
preceding winter. This season was
spent much as the last, in au interesting,
monotonous manner. Here we suffered
hunger, cold and nakedness. The few
scant rags that covered our suffering bod
ies were but little protection against the
keen and freezing blast of wind in that
cold climate. Cad were the hearts of
our little band of ragged rebels when the
genial sun of spring began to melt the
snow and thaw the frozen ground, a sure
precursor oT a movement of’some kind.
About the first of May it became evi
dent something was going to be done.
As is well known, Hen. Grant was now
placed in command of the Northern army
and began to manoeuvre to cross the
Rapidan. The first thing we knew we were
on the March, and on the fifth of May,
18C4, went into the memorable Wilder
ness fight. Our command (Ewell’s
corps,) were thrown in the advance, and
on the night of the fourth bivouaced
within two miles of the Federal army.
The country where we made this fight is
appropriately named. It was certainly
a wiliUrnexa. The growth was so dense,
that the vision could not penetrate it in
many places more than fitty yards. On ( the
morning of the sth of May the battle was
opened by an attack on Jones’ Va. bri
gade. The Yankees were met with a
galling fire, but pressed on and drove
Gen. Jones back, thus making a gap in
the line. Gen. John U. Gordon’s (our)
brigade was ordered to his relief. Then,
with the well known “ rebel yell,” we
drove the enemy back, capturinga whole
Yankee regiment with its officers and
colors. This was only a skirmish com
pared to what followed. Our loss in
this charge was small in numbers but
considerable in quality. Wehadoneof
our best soldiers disabled-Willis 15. Jack
son was wounded by a minnie ball in
the neck. On the morning of the Gth
Gen. Gordon made a fierce and unex
pected attack on Sedge wick’s corps.
This was about daylight, and the Yan
kees were preparing their breaklast when
Gen. Gordon rushed on them, throwing
them into the utmost confusion, making
them leave their breakfast without
even taking a hasty dish of chocolate.
This was probably tli* hardest day’s fight
ing thauwe had done yet. being engag
ed almost all day. Iu the charge on
Sedgewick’s corps wo captured a large
number of prisoners, among the
them two Yankee Generals. Our loss
was heavy for our small number. \Vound
ed—Oapt. R. T. Dorough, Sanders Jack
son, George A. Mathis and Jesse Theod
eriek Farmer. Mahtis and Farmer died
of their wounds. James Raiden was
captured by the enemy. There may
have been other casualties not now re
membered.
A funny incident occurred during this
day’s lighting : In one of the charges
several of our boys went too far and got
mixed with the Yankees. With our boys
was old Capt Rankin, who was in
command of the regiment and a great
favorite with all. A squad of Yank ess
approached our boys and demanded
their .surrender. Old Ce.pt. Rankin at
this moment drew his sword and replied,
“ Surrender yourselves, G-d d-m you !”
and made them surrender. With this
day wound up the battle of the Wilderness
where streams of the best Southern blood
was poured out for the “ lost cause.” As
will be remembered Gen. Longstreet was
disabled, and Gen. Stuart, our great caval
ry chieftain, was killed.

Is there a man so far behind
As not to know that he can find
At this palacial clothing store,
Goods lit for ail: both rich and poor?
If there be such, the man we fear
Now goes in rag.; hU parse is bear—
lor clothing poor he paid far more
Than Stern sells first-class at his store!
Rut we do not believe such an ignoramus
exists in Middle Georgia—certainly not in
Oglethorpe county. Why, if yon asked one
of ow citizens if lie ever heard of the cloth
ing store of < harles Stern A Cos., he would re
ply twisting his face into an angry exclama
tion [joint and defiantly asking if you “ Ever
heard of George Washington and his little
hatchet?” “Of the Echo?” “Of ‘Beauti
ful Snow ?’ ” “ Did you take him for Rip
Van Winkle or a native of Ranks county ?”
“ Did he look like a darn fool —an ignoramus
—a heathen Chinee, or a native of Kamskat
ka ?” and wind up the colloquy by knocking
you down for offering such a gross insult to
his intelligence. Of course he had not only
heard of this famous establishment but has
bought his clothing of it for nigh on to ten
years ; knew Charlie Stern fike a hook—had
drank lager with Sicilian—and as to Charlie
Young, why ain’t he one of our own boys and
the cleverest fellow extant? They are perlect
gentlemen, in the superlative degree—heroes
all—“ and look here stranger,” the irate citi
zen would continue, “ now don’t you chirp a
word agin that trio unless you want that oth
er eye blacked I”
Yes, gentle reader, every man, woman and
child in Oglethorpe county knows this old
and reliable house, and several of our young
men have actually been seen walking with
their sweethearts in almost rags and tatters,
preferring thus to appear rather than buy
their suits elsewhere than at Sterns’. They
know from a long experience that in buying
there they are sure to get the best end most
stylish goods, have an unlimited stock to se
lect from, and buy at hard-pan, rock-bottom
prices. They know, too, that they will be
honorably and fairly dealt by and will find
their purchases just as represented. This
house ha- a permanent advertisement and
warm friend in their every customer. All
classi* of our people are their patrons. The
professional is sure to find in this stock the
very raiment, from skin out, to suit his taste
ami avocation; the farmer can buy here his
holiday suit or coarse plantation clothes—in
fact, all can lie suited with garments fitted
for his sphere in life, whether it he to attend
as groomsman the nuptials of a princess or to
lie boss at a corn-shucking.
Their stock this season is larger than ever,
with a better assortment and lower prices.
T heir stock of clothin'g is simply immense, in
men’s, boys’ and childrens’. A number of
these goods this enterprising firm has had
made to order, while the remainder of their
stock was bought direct from manufacturers
noted for their reliability. Even this house,
where every article is pur excellence , has its
specialty, viz.: the finest and most beautiful
cassimere dress pants, made tu order, for only
five dollars. When we remember that, a reg
ula%tailor would charge from sl2 to sls for a
similar article the announcement is truly
startling. Their famous '• PEARL SHIRT” is
another specialty, which is sold at only one
dollar. We have worn these shirts and can
knowingly recommend them as first-class in
every particular.
Their Hat Department undeniably leads the
van in Middle Georgia. Almost one entire
side of this long store is devoted to their dis
play. Should you desire anything from the
finest beaver to the coarsest straw this is the
place to .buy it. You can finjj here tiles of
every imaginable make, shape and quality,
and upon pricing them their cheapness is
sure to astound you. There are high and low
crowned hats, wide and broad brimmed hats,
stiff and limber hats, the nobbiest of hats, the
crackerist of hats, and hats in wool, straw,
felt, beaver, Panama, Leghorn, calico and we
know not what else.
And ye who anticipate a jaunt to the moun
tains this summer—you, too, are remembered
here. This firm has on hand a fine stock of
zinc, canvas and leather covered trunks, in
which clothing has been shipped, that are be
ing sold at New Y ork wholesale cost, with
the price of a dry goods box knocked off. Al
so, the finest stock of valises to be fouud in
State, very low.
Three hundred white vents make a big pile.
A census taken this week of their stock show
ed that number to comprise the assortment.
Did you say prices? Well, they range all the
way from 75 cents up—dirt cheap.
In cravats, ties, collars, cuffs, suspenders
and all manner of gents’ furnishing goods
this firm stands pre-eminent. The have all
the latest styles and novelties. I all manner
.of gents’ underwear their stock is uneclipsed.
In fact, their every department is a specialty,
and woe unto the merchant who attempts to
undersell them, for ruin pid bankruptcy is
his inevitable portion.
Mr. Charles Stern, the senior partner, is a
merchant that reflects honor on his city and
section. We have known him intimately for
years and have never seen a more scrupulous
ly correct man. He is just as clever and accom
modating as can be, and his e"ery assertion
can be implicitly relied ::poa. Mr. Sloman,
the junior has been one of our best
friends. He is one of the finest business men
in Middle Georgia, and we have ever found
him the soul of honor. There may be cleverer
men in the world than Sloman, but we don’t
believe it. We all know Charlie Young, the
popular and gentlemanly salesman of this
house. He is from our county, and a truer,
better or more honorable gentleman was nev
er created.
We have once already described the mag
nificent establishment occupied by this firm,
which wils especially erected for them and
their business. It is truly a palacial store,
that would do credit to Broadway, N. A’., and
would well repay a trip to Athens to see.

LIVES PILLS,
FOR THE CURE OF
Hepatitis, or Liver Complaint,
DYSPEPSIA AND SICK HEADACHE.
Symptoms of a Diseased Liver.
LAIN in the right side, under the
1 edge of the ribs, increases on pres
sure; sometimes the pain is in the left
side; the patient is rarely able to lie
on the left side; sometimes the pain is
felt under the shoulder blade, and it
frequently extends to the top of the
shoulder, and is sometimes mistaken
for rheumatism in the arm. The
stomach is affected with loss of appe
tite and sickness; the bowels in gen
eral are costive, sometimes alternative
with lax; the head is troubled with
pain, accompanied with a dull, heavy
sensation in the back part. There is
generally a considerable loss of mem
ory, accompanied with a painful sen
sation of having left, undone some
thing which ought to have been done.
A slight, dry cough is sometimes an
attendant. The patient complains of
weariness and debility; he is easily
startled, his feet are cold off burning,
and he complains of a prickly sensa
tion of the skin; his spirits are low;
and although he is satisfied that exer
cise would be beneficial to him, yet
he can scarcely summon up fortitude
enough to try it. In fact, he distrusts
every remedy. Several of the above
symptoms attend the disease, hut cases
have occurred where few of them ex
isted, yet examination of the body,
after death, has shown the liver to
have been extensively deranged.
AGUE AND FEVER.
Dr. C. McLane’s Liver Pills, in
cases of Ague and Fever, when
taken with Quinine, are productive of
the most happy results. No better
cathartic can be used, preparatory to,
or after taking Quinine. We would
advise all who are afflicted with this
disease to give them a fair trial.
For all bilious derangements, and as
a simple purgative, they are unequaled.

Dr. MLW. CASE’S'
Liver Remedy
BLOOD PURIFIER
Tonic and Cordial.
This is not a patent medicine, but is prepared
under the direction of Dr. SL W. Case, from his
favorite prescription, which in an extensive
practice of over twenty-seven years he has found
most effective in all cases of disordered liver or
impure blood. It is
ANTI-BILIOUS.
It acts directly upon the liver, restoring it
when diseased to its normal condition; and in
regulating the activity of this great gland every
other organ of the system is benefited. In Blood
Diseases it has no equal as a purifier. It im
proves digestion, and assists nature to eliminate
all impurities from the system; and while it is
the cheapest medicine in the market, it is alsa
superior to all known remedies. While it is
more effectual than Blue Mass, it Is mild and
perfectly safe, containing nothing that can in the
slightest degree injure the system. It does not
sicken or give pain; neither does it Weaken the
patient, nor leave the system constipated, as do
most other medicines.
