We find the following letter written
from LaGrauge, Ga., to tlie I raver.-e Hay,
Mich., Kagle in praises of our Sunny
South: U cold , , r for
1 >i;a i: Old Kagi.e:- it i«
You on your percii* Up Noith, and \our
wings are covered with frost and snow,
it does hot seem to prevent your flight
over the snow-covered forests of your
own Suite, but you also neeia to have i
carried news to Wisconsin. Indiana. Illinois, I |
IVuiisylvani.i. Ohio and am
sun* \on ii.ii-t have gone there, as people
lta»e"«rilteti meahout you and else the grand
news you have given them of sunny
South ; and especially of the beauties
ami advantages in and around LaGrange.
You have not told hall that you
ofthis country Still, I hear that your
correspondent has incurred the displeas
lire oi some high-toned gentleman of the
colored persuasion for what he has told
von about the average negro in the South.
Of course, other birds besides yours
must have a right to talk, and if the crow
wants his you must let him debate, and
not try mid stop him because be is a
crow. Wi- will even let him have all the
religion he claims, and you and I will
take our chances in being industrious,
obeying the laws id nature and of the
country we live in, and strive to do good
to our fcllowman ; and no crow has a
right to say we shall or shail not wor¬
ship (Jod according to the dictates of our
own conscience.
The truth of what I have said about
the need of skilled labor in the South,
no man of common intelligence will do
ny. I he very best friends of the negro
will tell you the same, and that skilled
white mechanics are needed in the South.
I again repeat that there is not a skilled
while carpenter in LaGrange. There i«,
of course carpenter's work done here,
and some very good work, but it is a very
slow process mnl must he by use ot such
tools as are in use by the class of me¬
chanics here. There are tools used ev¬
ery day by carpenters up North that a
carpenter lu re would no more know the
use nl than he would know the distance
to the moon. And this is not to he won¬
dered at, as everything seems to he fifty
years behind the times. I he men of
business, f think, are in a great measure
to blame, as they don’t seem to care for
anything different so long us they can
make money. They never think that a
building needs repairs or remodeling,
find think that money spent for city im¬
provements is thrown away. If you
could take this city, with its many ad¬
vantages, its beautiful surrounding, stud
place it in as advantageous a locality up
North, in one y« ar what are now ungain¬
ly store fronts, dilapidated old walls and
architectural designs so homely that they
will stop a town clock, you would have
one of the, most handsome cities in vour
State; and 1 don't think that the State
could hoa-t of better. Although there
arc many wealthy citizens here, we have
no water works, and still the natural ad¬
vantages for such are good. No one ap¬
peal- to cure for improvements. This
house that f am in was (miIt before the
war, mnl 1 doubt if any improvements or
repairs find been made until 1 came here;
and the owners say they don’t wan’t to
make any repairs, as they bought it not
to put money into it, hut to get it out,
which they do to the tune of some hun¬
dred and liftv dollars per month on eight
thousand dollars worth of property but
the business wilI pay it.
All the business men are gentlemen little of
undoubted integrity, but have the. city; en¬
terprise for the improvement of
which state of affairs, ns I have already
said, can only be accounted (or by the
present system of labor, wnieh is not on*
!y a draw-back to the city, but to the
whole community, and can only be im¬
proved by the introduction ot more trus¬
ty and skilled labor. If the negro lias
any advanced ideas, ilia to get more pay
lor less labor. I have said lie is tho best
pai i laborer on the face of the earth, lor
the amount of labor ho performs, aud I
have no reason to retract the statement;
hut how to supply his place and dispense
with him is a greated problem than the
northwest passage. We have got him
here and he should and must he taken
care of, and none are more willing or
anxious for his welfare than the South¬
ern people. The negro Inis no doubt
done well since his emancipation, skilled labor and,
with the introduction of m
the South, we believe lie will do belter;
hut without advanced ideas and skilled
labor to pattern after, his progress is and
must he slow.
The large amount of lands owned by
individuals and not cultivated should he
bought or rented by people of the North,
who in a very short time would become
prosperous and thrifty. The South
would, from such a disposition of things,
-become one of the finest countries in the
world. The soil, climate and resources
.nature has bestowed with a lavish hand

than 1 have represented it, and the
